Caused by a condition called port-wine stain, Joanne Tronconi has always had birthmarks from swollen blood vessels that created a reddish-purplish discoloration of the skin. But it wasn’t until about 20 years ago that Tronconi found out she also has Klippel-Trenaunay syndrome, a rare disease that causes severe swelling anywhere the red birthmark is located.






About 3 out of 1,000 people have port-wine stains. Although the marks typically appear on the face, the condition can occur all over the body. Port-wine stains on children are usually flat and pink but the color often deepens to a dark red or purplish color as they grow older. The area thickens and takes on a cobblestone-like appearance, which Tronconi says makes people take a second a look as she walks by.










“Many people stare, comment, and come up with their own conclusions,” she says.



Although Tronconi has come to terms with her condition and considers herself beautiful in her own way, wearing makeup helps her regain some of her confidence. With the help of her son Matt, a drag makeup genius who goes by Clawdeena on YouTube, Tronconi applies foundation, eye makeup and lipstick to cover her marks.










Using Dermablend full-coverage foundation, Tronconi starts by evening out her complexion and adds a little contour. Then Matt steps in and puts his fierce makeup skills to work (he once transformed himself into Moschino Barbie). He shape his mom’s eyebrows and frames her eyes with winged eyeliner. Matt ends by handing off a tube of liquid lipstick to Mom so she can finish up the look on her own.
