Cold Sores Linked to Genetic Mutation

A new study reveals that a mutation in a gene that makes some people more prone to a strain of the herpes virus causes cold sores. This is because they have immune systems that are unable to prevent cold sores developing.
Eighty to 90 percent of people are infected with herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1). However, only about a quarter of these people they have frequent canker sores. After analyzing thousands of genes, researchers at the University of Edinburgh were able to identify those expressing proteins necessary for the immune system to prevent the virus is activated. Cold sores develop when the virus is active.

The researchers also linked the IL28B gene responses to treatment for patients with hepatitis C. The researchers found that patients are less likely to respond well to treatment if this gene is mutated. The researchers said the latest study supports previous findings that a single genetic mutation can be linked to different viruses.
"Most people carry the strain of herpes labialis herpes simplex virus, but so far never knew why only some develop cold sores" researcher Professor Juergen Haas, University Camino Medicine Division of Edinburgh, said in a press release.
"Knowing that susceptibility to the virus in question concerns the genes of people reinforces the need for research, not only the evolution of the viruses themselves, but also susceptibility to infection of hosts, "Haas added.
