A new study brain impulsive traits linked to neurological differences correlated with greater craving for snuff behavior -. And possibly other drugs

A new study on cravings can further confirm the suspicions of helplessness of man in a deterministic universe first explored by the ancient philosophers Democritus and Leucippus - at least for anyone trying to quit
a neurological proclivity of behavior impulsive has been. show to play a key role in the onset of snuff consumption and consumption patterns as well as relapse after quitting amid strong craving for nicotine drug. Stéphane Potvin, a psychiatrist at the University of Montreal, examined the neurobiological influence of impulsivity in cravings in 31 chronic smokers snuff.
smokers were exposed to snuff related images as well as neutral images while undergoing a brain scan to. They reported their feelings of desire and completed the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale, a psychological measure of impulsivity trait. Potvin and his research team examined the functional connectivity using the method of psychophysiological interaction, looking at activity in certain brain areas and how they interact with others.
When images related to smoking are, study participants experienced increased activity in the cingulate cortex and prefrontal cortex and the limbic system, Potvin he reported Tuesday. Under these conditions, smokers scored higher on impulsivity and measurements reported greater craving for snuff. At the same time, the researchers observed activity decline in posterior cingulate cortex (PCC), which may play a role in modulating cravings snuff.

That part of the brain off over the insula, dorsal cortex anterior cingulate and dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, involving more that as a key area of the brain associated with addiction to snuff.
"Our results suggest that high impulsive smokers have more difficulty controlling their cravings, and that this weakness may be mediated by reduced activity PCC" wrote Potvin. "Moreover, it is argued that lower activity PCC, the greater the chance of an attentional emotional, physiological and biased signals mediated by smoking insula response stronger, [dorsal anterior cingulate cortex] and [dorsolateral prefrontal cortex activity]."
However, the study is the first to explore this area of science and addiction has not yet been confirmed by other researchers on subjects addicted to snuff or other drugs.
Potvin said the results should encourage researchers to study further the posterior cingulate cortex, given the evidence in previous brain studies implicating that area as a key cravings snuff and other drugs
