Thousands of Kids’ Products Contain Toxic Chemicals

More than 5,000 products, including clothing, toys and bedding, contain toxic chemicals that could be hazardous to the health of children, however, they still common shops and consumers know very little about its contents, an advocacy group reported this week.

"For most products in our homes, including products for children, who simply do not have standards," said Erika Schreder, science director of the Toxics Coalition of Washington and author of report released Wednesday on the basis of toxic chemicals data from the state of Washington. "Manufacturers are allowed to use almost anything they want."

The report, called "Chemicals Revealed", identified more than 5,000 products such as footwear, car seats and arts and crafts supplies including developmental or reproductive toxins and carcinogens. These toxic metals such as mercury, cadmium, cobalt, antimony and molybdenum are included. Manufacturers also reported the use of phthalates in clothing, toys, bedding and baby products. Phthalates, chemicals that cause hormonal disorders, most often used to make flexible plastics.

The Washington Toxics Coalition and more secure America, a coalition of advocacy groups of consumers, products sold in the state of Washington looked at each other. The state in 2008 began requiring retailers to inform if you are selling products containing one of the 66 chemicals identified by the state as of high concern for children.

The law requires large companies that make products for children to report to the Department of Ecology of the State of Washington from last year. The report refers to certain children's products sold in the state from June 1, 2012 to March 1, 2013.

Large retailers who reported the use of chemicals in their products include Walmart, Gap, Gymboree, Hallmark and H & M


retailers are not required to report the exact product, however, only the product categories. The report identified party hats Hallmark containing arsenic causes cancer, for example, but because of the limited data that manufacturers and retailers are required to disclose, it is impossible to specify the exact party hat.

Other products identified in the report: car seats Graco contain flame retardants toxic tetrabromobisphenol A, cosmetics Claire containing formaldehyde causes cancer, and wrists Walmart containing disruptors hormone bisphenol A .

the groups praised manufacturers and retailers to provide even the limited data, saying the information is critical to understanding the presence of toxic chemicals. However, to protect children really, Schreder said, manufacturers need to identify the safest ways to make their products and stop using harmful chemicals. The organization also supports efforts to ban two fire retardants in the state of Washington.

For more information, consumers should pressure retailers and individual manufacturers for more information, said Sarah Doll Safer States, which is part of a network of environmental health groups nationwide.

"The most important this is to demonstrate a system that is broken, and to ask for a better protection," Doll said. "Actually, you can go to the store and say, 'I want to ask their suppliers if these products contain these chemicals.'"

Only Maine has a similar program, but other states may follow suit Washington in the absence of federal regulations. A report by the Accountability Office Federal Government published in March found that the Environmental Protection Agency is limited under the Toxic Substances Control Act authority.

Of the 83 chemicals EPA has given priority to risk assessment, the agency began seven evaluations in 2012 and plans to start 18 additional assessments this year and next, the GAO report found.


The report also found that it can take several years to complete these initial risk assessments and, at current rates of the agency, more a decade to complete all 83. the EPA has no toxicity data and exposure required for 58 of the 83 chemicals prioritized for risk assessment, the report said.

Two Democratic senators, Frank Lautenberg of New Jersey and Kirsten Gillibrand of New York, introduced the Law on Chemical Safety 2013, which would give the EPA more tools to gather information about health and safety chemicals evaluated for safety and risk management required when chemicals can not be shown to be safe.

"What saved our national chemicals policy is that at least allows states to act. At this time are spilling the only light we have what toxic chemicals end up in products" said Andy Igrejas, executive director of the Washington DC-based Safer Chemicals, Healthy Families, an organization of state groups dedicated to reducing the toxicity of consumer goods.
