A massive solar flare - the strongest so far this year -. Exploded yesterday (27 JAN) of the same active region of the sun that triggered a solar storm raging earlier this weekthe solar flare was classified as an X1.7 class eruption, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
X-class flares are the most powerful kind of solar storm, with storms class M entering the midrange, and C-class flares are the weakest.
Several spacecraft, including the Solar Dynamics Observatory of NASA and the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory, observed the solar flare, which it occurred at 13:37 ET (1837 GMT). The flare unleashed a wave of charged particles, called coronal mass ejection, but space weather experts said it was not aimed at Earth.
the flare exploded sunspot 1402, a region where the sun has been particularly active lately. Earlier this week, a separate regional explosion sent a cloud of charged particles toward Earth and caused strong radiation storm since 2003.
"It's a big week for space weather!" wrote Dean Pesnell, SDO project scientist at the Center Goddard Space Flight NASA in Greenbelt, Md., in a blog update.
This time, however, was not the flare shot while sunspot region faces Earth, according to Spaceweather.com. Still, a storm resulting radiation is possible and will continue to be monitored.
"Region 1402 is alive !!!!!!!!!!!!!!" officials said Prediction Center NOAA Space Weather on Facebook. "Another big event of X-rays is ongoing."
When a powerful X-class flare is heading directly toward Earth that can sometimes cause disruptions in satellites in space and energy networks and communications infrastructure on the ground. Flares strong and coronal mass ejections can also pose potential risks to astronauts on the International Space Station.
In response, NOAA has issued radio blackouts and a storm warning radiation while the storm sun is ongoing.
"This warning is in effect for the next 24 hours," officials said the agency in a statement.
