FLAXSEEDS – SUPERFOOD THAT LOWERS CHOLESTEROL, PREVENTS DIABETES AND SHEDS POUNDS

Flaxseeds come from flax, one of the oldest fiber crops in the world – known to have been cultivated in...

ancient Egypt and China.

King Charlemagne of the 8th century believed so strongly in the health benefits of flaxseeds that he demanded his loyal subjects eat the seeds and passed laws to make sure of it.

Although flaxseed contains all sorts of healthy components, it owes its primary healthy reputation to three of them: omega-3 essential fatty acids, fiber and lignans.

Modern research has found evidence to suggest that flaxseed can help lower the risk of diabetes, cancer, and heart disease.

LOWERING CHOLESTEROL

Researchers at the Iowa State University’s Nutrition and Wellness Research Center found that cholesterol levels lowered among men who included flaxseed in their diet. Suzanne Hendrich, lead author of the study, said that for “people who can’t take something like Lipitor, this could at least give you some of that cholesterol-lowering benefit.”..

In one 12-month study, flaxseeds caused an additional 8.5% reduction in LDL-cholesterol, when compared to those not consuming flaxseeds.

IMPROVING BLOOD SUGAR

In people with type 2 diabetes, studies show that supplementing 10–20 g/day of flaxseed powder for 1–2 months may reduce fasting blood sugar by up to 19.7%.

However, not all studies have found flaxseeds to be effective in regulating blood glucose and insulin levels.

Although the link between flaxseeds and type 2 diabetes is still unclear, they may be considered a safe and healthy addition to the diet for individuals with type 2 diabetes.

WEIGHT LOSS

Flaxseeds are in the same camp as walnuts when it comes to containing healthy fats and fiber. This will help you feel full longer and may lead to weight loss.

A study published in the Journal of Nutrition found that both flax seeds and walnuts help to reduce obesity. Try sprinkling a couple of teaspoons of ground flax seeds in smoothies, yogurt, salad and soups.

Don’t Forget to Grind Them

Many people ask if they can use them in their whole form. The issue with this is that when you consume whole flax, the body can’t digest the hard outer casing and break apart all of the goodness inside.

Grind whole flaxseeds in your blender or coffee grinder. Store them in a cool dark place.
