This also oils and lotions applied tan-that many of those who may be using right now with summer in full swing, as well as baby oil or lotion that many parents slather inadvertently account of their babies.
Many skin lotions, creams and oils contain mineral oil, like many tanning products. Mineral oil may seem safe enough, but ... it is not.
Mineral oil is actually a petroleum derivative, like put on the car engine. Because it is very viscous (slippery), many products use mineral oil as a main ingredient, allowing the lotion is easily transmitted through the skin. This despite the fact that it is a known carcinogen!
is also comedogenic, which means that it blocks the pores and natural breathing process of your skin. Blocked pores can lead to blackheads and pimples. And, since the mineral oil can create an impenetrable film on your skin, it can also block the absorption of beneficial ingredients that may exist in the product.
Moisturizers with mineral oil can be Tumorigenic
The study was published in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology, found that moisturizers common use containing mineral oil are tumorigenic when applied topically to mice UVB-pretreated high risk. What this means is that these creams and lotions can increase the rate at which skin tumors are formed. The study tested four common skin lotions
-Dermabase
-Dermovan
-Eucerin Original Moisturizing Cream
-Vanicream
What these creams have in common is they all contain mineral oil. Mice with a high risk of developing skin cancer received a topical application of 100 mg of one of the creams once a day, five days a week for 17 weeks. The researchers concluded that the rate of tumor formation was significantly increased, as tumor size per mouse. In fact, the number of histologically characterized tumors increased by a whopping 69 percent!
According to the authors:
"The results indicate that several moisturizers available in the market increase the rate of formation and the number of tumors when applied topically to mice at high risk UVB-pretreated . further studies are needed to determine the effects of topical application of moisturizers on skin cancer induced by sunlight in humans. "
Beware of tanning oils containing mineral oil!
In light of the potential tumorigenic effects effects of mineral oil on exposed skin by UVB, it is logical to think that this is not an ingredient you want in your suntan lotion or tanning oil. However, that's just what you'll find in many tanning products. Unfortunately, just because you do not see it on the label, it does not mean it is not there. Mineral oil has countless different names, but each has the same effect ... one that will want to stay away from!
Mothers: Be careful what you put on your skin and your baby
Many women who breastfeed cream applied to her breasts without much regard for what is in it. Hopefully now it will not be one of them. Studies have found that actually paraffin mineral oils may bioaccumulate in both fat tissue and human breast milk. According to the authors of a 2008 study
"Paraffin minerals could be the biggest polluter of our body, widely worth 1 gram per person and reach 10 grams in extreme cases."
It is believed that your baby can get one percent of accumulated in your body and breast milk mineral paraffin. A previous study summarizes the problem of using skin creams containing mineral oil when breastfeeding:
"By exposing infants through human milk intake by licking off direct ointments ( in the worst case is Vaseline) chest of their nursing mothers may be much higher. in a worst case situation, it is estimated that daily consumption of care products breast babies to reach 40 mg / kg body weight.
Many compositions do not meet specifications and temporary group ADI of 0-4mg / kg of body weight established by the SCF. This potential exposure of infants or requires a toxicological reassessment mineral paraffins or measures to ensure that exposure of babies is reduced. "
