"This is the first time that direct reprogramming technology has been used to treat cancer." For the study, published in the journal Nature Communications , the researchers reprogrammed skin cells called fibroblasts to become neural stem cells to produce a protein to destroy tumors. The cells in the skin to produce collagen and connective tissue, hunt and kill cancer cells. The cells are inserted into mice and kept in place using a physical matrix in order to keep them there long enough to look for cancer cells in the area time. Depending on the type and the specific location of the tumor, the researchers report that increased the survival of mice by 160-220 percent. Future research will focus on the use of human stem cells and test more effective anti-cancer drugs that can be combined with neural stem cells reprogrammed
