These suggestions are recommended by a physical therapist from the Mayo Clinic and is used to help patients deal with neck pain on their own.












Step 1 – Find the Problem Area


The first step is to determine the exact point of the stiffness. Determine if the problem area is located more to your right side or your left side. Use your hand to feel along your muscles and locate the stiff spots.


Step 2 – Knead the Stiff Muscles


Use your fingers to knead the muscles. Use firm pressure, pressing on the knot with your fingertips. As you knead the muscles, pay attention to your pain levels. You should begin to feel some relief and not additional pain. Sharp pain is a sign that you are dealing with a more severe cramp.


If you cannot reach the problem area with your fingers, then use a tennis ball or a rounded object to reach the stiff muscles.


Step 3 – Stretch Your Neck Muscles


After kneading the sore area for several seconds, turn your head down and to the side – away from the cramp, as if smelling your armpit. For example, if the pain is located on the left side of your neck, turn your head towards your right armpit.












As you turn your head, apply pressure to your neck and shoulder muscles. Again, pay attention to your body and stop applying pressure if you experience sharp pain.


Step 4 – Repeat the Steps


Next, you should repeat the second and third steps until you experience relief. With your head facing straight, and your back straight, massage the sore muscles, then turn your head towards your armpit and apply pressure. Continue repeating the steps for about sixty seconds.


After the sixty seconds have passed, if you still feel pain or have a stiff neck, wait several minutes and try this technique again.


Once the stiffness subsides, stand up and stretch. Stretch your arms up into the air, while arching your back and tilting your head – as if you just got out of bed.


This is a simple exercise that anyone can do, whether you are at home or the office. As soon as you notice muscle stiffness along your neck and shoulders, you should take the time to deal with the pain the stiffness becomes unbearable.
