Foot Cream Kills HIV By Tricking Cells To Commit Suicide

In a study conducted at the Medical School of Rutgers in New Jersey, not only the drug ciclopirox completely eradicate infectious HIV from cell cultures, but unlike the most antiviral treatments forefront of today, the virus doesn 't bounce when the drug is retained. This means you may not require a lifetime of use to keep HIV at bay.
The same group of researchers had previously shown that ciclopirox - approved by the EMA and the FDA of Europe as safe for human use for the treatment of foot fungus - inhibits the expression of HIV genes culture. Now it has been found that also blocks the essential function of the mitochondria, resulting in reviving the path of cell suicide, all without harming healthy cells.

The researchers said that one of the aspects of HIV that makes it particularly persistent, even in the face of strong antiviral treatments, it is its ability to disable altruistic suicide via a cell - which is normally activated when a cell is damaged or infected. In other words, cells that normally commit suicide to spare healthy cells no longer pull any altruistic kamikaze missions infected. ciclopirox tricks these cells back to the old ways with a double negative, disabling disabling the path of suicide.
is obviously still going to take clinical trials in humans to study the safety and efficacy of ciclopirox as a topical potential treatment of HIV, but the fact that it is already considered safe for a type of human use could make the regulatory process faster than usual.

Indeed, researchers have noted that another drug approved by the FDA now believes helps hold HIV, called deferiprone , studies skipped in animals and went straight from tests in culture to a phase I human trials in south Africa, possibly paving the way for other drugs approved by the FDA to move faster through phases of the study. (Unlike ciclopirox, which is approved for the topical treatment, deferiprone is the FDA and EMA-approved for systemic use, which means it affects more than one part of the body.)
New findings about ciclopirox appear in the current issue of PLoS ONE .
