Scientists Sound Off: Ban GMO Testing In India
Scientists gathered in New Delhi to discuss the need for the Indian government to ban testing of GMOs in their country. The meeting was a Document Release organized by Aruna Rodrigues, "lead petitioner in a public interest litigation" seeking the ban.As reported last month, the ban proposal, supported by a committee appointed by the Supreme Court of India, would ban trials GMO field for 10 years , at least, the postponement of environmental and health risks damaging the seeds and GM foods .
India is (rightly) concerned that field trials of GMO Monsanto could lead to significant contamination of other farms in the country, pollution could be the ruin of many farms otherwise-sustainable.
"what we really need is a paradigm shift, where a holistic approach drives our interventions in agriculture without reductionist solutions hogging center stage and valuable resources away, "professor Hans Herren, co-chair of the International Assessment of agricultural Knowledge, Science and Technology for Development (IAASTD), winner of World said Food 1995. These high-level scientists gathered to mark their support as they could offer one more meaningful to the seed-giant hit.
conventional crops are not only safer than transgenic crops; they are more productive. And any step closer to the institution of transgenic seeds in India or elsewhere is a step in agricultural productivity and sustainable agriculture.
"Only two countries in the world, in South America, GM grow by more than 40% of their farmland and both are suffering from increased food insecurity, "said professor Jack Heinemann of the School of Biological Sciences at the University of Canterbury. "Most of their poor neighbors who have not adopted GM have improved food security statistics."
This is not the only farmers problem that forced to use genetically modified seeds pay higher prices and take greater risks. This is seen in suicide rates among the striking farmers who have moved to GM crops, a frightening fact. In 2009, for example, about an Indian farmer took his own life every 30 minutes .
With the risks of GM crops undeniable level, countries worldwide are the forefront in stopping Monsanto in its tracks. One can only hope their fervor will continue to spread
