We all love potatoes, no matter the way they’re prepared. However, there is something we need to know about potatoes, and that is – they need to be kept in a very certain environment.

Most of you probably know that potatoes need to be kept in a dry and dark place. However, what many people don’t know is that keeping the potatoes in a damp or bright place could seriously affect your own health.


When potatoes are kept in a too warm or moist place they tend to sprout and even turn a little green. Now, what many people don’t know is that when the potatoes turn green, they become poisonous. Why? Because of the fact that a poison called solanine builds up within the potatoes.

Solanine can be found in potatoes that are kept in the wrong environment for too long, and the consumption of the same can make you feel extremely sick and can potentially be fatal.

In addition, The New York Times reported that a 100 pound person can get truly sick if he consumes 16 oz. of a green potato. That’s about one average sized potato.

As reported by The Food Safety Authority of Ireland, you will experience stomach pain and drowsiness if you have consumed too much solanine. They also suggest that you can peel the potato and use the parts that are not green, but if the potato tastes a bit bitter, you should throw it out immediately.

In order not to take the risk, we advise you not to use and consume potatoes that have turned green. Also, make sure that you’re storing the potatoes in a dry and dark place.
