TUBERCULOSIS

Tuberculosis (TB) is an infectious disease caused by
the bacterium Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB).
Tuberculosis is a very dangerous problem spreading
all over the world. It can affect lungs, but can also affect other parts of the
body. The common symptoms of active TB are chronic cough with blood-containing
sputum, fever, night sweats, and weight loss.
Causes
Tuberculosis is a communicable disease which can
spread from an infected person through microscopic droplets released into the
air. This can happen when an infected person coughs, speaks, sneezes, spits,
laughs or sings.
Tuberculosis is contagious however its not easy to
catch. It is communicable so you are much more likely to get tuberculosis from
someone you live with or work with than from a stranger.
Most people with active TB who’ve had appropriate
drug treatment for at least 2 weeks are no longer contagious.
Complications

Spinal
pain:- tuberculosis may cause back pain and stiffness in
our body. - ·
Joint
damage:- it can also damage our joints such as, hips and
knee joints. - ·
Swelling
of the membrane that cover your brain:- it can also
effect our brain and mental changes are also possible. This can cause a lasting
or intermittent headache that occurs for weeks. - ·
Liver
or kidney problems:- kidney and liver both are useful
to throw out the waste products from our body. They stop working properly if
they get damaged by tuberculosis. - · Heart
disorders:- this can also directly affect our
hearts. It interferes in its working and causes heart problems like, cardiac
tamponade, can be fatal.
Symptoms
There are many symptoms of tuberculosis which can
warn us:-
- ·
A person may have bad cough that lasts 3
weeks or longer. - ·
Some may feel pain in their chest. - ·
Through cough blood may also come out
from our lungs. - ·
It causes weakness or fatigue in our
body. - ·
A person may lose weight without any
reason. - ·
No appetite, chills, fever and sweating
at night are some common symptoms of TB.
Prevention
Active tuberculosis is very common problem among us.
WHO estimates that one-third of the world’s population is infected with the
bacteria that causes TB.
But there are some tips which can prevent us from
TB.
- ·
Don’t spend too much time with an
infected person in a closed room. Stay away from an infected person until that
person has been treated for at least 2 weeks. - ·
If you work in caring centers of where
TB infected people are kept then you must
use protective measures such as, masks. - ·
If you live with someone who has active
TB, help and encourage the person to follow treatment instructions.
