She Pours Water On Her Propane Tank Every Time She Grills… The Reason? That’s Brilliant!

In my home, clear sunny skies and warm weather means it’s time to fire up the grill. So I’ll invite some friends over and make a quick run to the supermarket to buy an excessive amount of food. Burgers, hotdogs, chicken wings, steaks, corn, fruits, coleslaw, potato salad, chips… I don’t get nice weather nearly as often as I’d like so I have a tendency to go a little overboard on grilling day. Seize the moment and all that.

But as embarrassing as it is to admit, I know that I’m not the only one that has experienced this scenario before: with a bunch of hungry guests over, I fire up the grill and begin cooking away only to have the fire suddenly cut out. Why? Because I’ve run out of gas. Whoops! Now that’s one way to completely ruin a grilling day, and it could have easily been prevented had I checked how much gas I had left. But how the heck do you check how much gas you have left?

For those of us that fuel our grills using a typical propane tank without a gauge, there’s no obvious and easy way to check how much gas is remaining in the tank. It’s pretty much just guesswork, so you never really know when you need to replace the tank until it’s pretty much too late… or do you? Apparently, someone far more clever than me has figured out a very cool trick to determine how much fuel you have left in your propane tank. And all you need is some hot water!

To check your propane tank, just boil some water and pour it all over the tank. Then take your hand and feel around the tank, from top to bottom. If the surface feels warm, that means that area is empty. But as you move your hand down, you may feel an area that’s noticeably cooler because the propane inside is absorbing the heat. Indeed, that drastic change in temperature marks the remaining propane!
