Praying for the Earth

Prayer is a way of being with the divine - of prayer which arises from the need, which we use words to express our needs, to the deepest prayer that takes us beyond the words on the unit and silence within the heart. This video is about the simplicity of the "prayer of the heart"

Prayer is the simplest and most natural way to communicate with the divine way. Prayer is the heart speaks. There are the prescribed prayers, rituals internal communion. But there is also our personal prayers, our way of being with the sacred that is our deepest nature and the world around us. In all that are drawn to pray, there is a pressing need at this time to include the land in our prayers.
We are living in a time of ecological devastation, in which our materialistic culture has had a catastrophic effect on the ecosystem. Our rivers are toxic, the cut and burned rainforest, vast tracts of land became a desert because of our insatiable desire for oil, gas and minerals. We have raped and pillaged and polluted the land until it is in a dangerous state of imbalance we call climate change. If we dare to listen, creation itself is now calling us, sending us signs of its imbalance. We can see these signs in increased flooding and droughts, feel in a land that has been poisoned with pesticides, and those whose hearts are open can hear the cry of the soul of the world, the spiritual being of our mother earth. It is a cry of need and despair that humanity that was supposed to be the guardian of the planet has forgotten its responsibility and its secular place and destroys the earth on a global scale.

The earth needs our prayers more than you know. We must recognize their sacred nature, which is not just something to use and discard. Many of us know the efficacy of prayers for others, how healing and help is given, even in the most unexpected ways. There are many ways to pray for the earth. It may be useful first to recognize that it is not "unfeeling matter" but a living being that has given us life. And then we can feel their suffering: physical suffering we see in the dying species and polluted waters, deeper suffering of our collective indifference to its sacred nature. Do we want to be treated simply as a physical object that is made use and abuse? Would we like our sacred nature, our soul, to be denied?
For centuries it was understood that the world was a living being with a soul, and we are part of this being. Once we remember this in our minds and in our hearts, once we hear the cry of our suffering, dying world, our prayers will flow more easily and naturally. We will be drawn to pray our way. Not the simple prayer of placing the world as a living being within our hearts when we offer ourselves inward to the divine. We remember the pain and suffering of the world in our hearts and ask the world to remember, that divine love and mercy flow where it is needed. That even though we continue to treat the world as evil, divine grace will help us and help the world - helps to bring land back into balance. We must remember that the power of God is greater than all global corporations that continue to make the world a wasteland, even more than the global forces of consumption that demand the lifeblood of the planet. We pray that God of which we are all a part can redeem and heal this beautiful and suffering of the world.
Sometimes it is easier to pray when we feel the earth in our hands, when we work on tending the garden our flowers or vegetables. Or when cooking, preparing vegetables that the earth has given us, the mixture of herbs and spices that give us pleasure. Or make love, as we share our body and happiness with our partner, we can feel the tenderness and power of creation, how a single spark can give birth. Then our sex life may be an offering to life itself, a memory felt totally ecstasy of creation.
The divine unity of life is within and around us. Sometimes walking alone in nature can feel your heartbeat and wonder, and our steps become steps of memory. The simple practice of "walking in a sacred manner" in which with every step we take we feel the connection to the holy land, is a way to reconnect with the living spirit of the earth.
There are so many ways to pray for and with the creation, within the earth listen and include our spiritual practice. Viewing the simple miracle of a sunrise can be a prayer in itself. Or when we hear the chorus of birds in the morning we can feel the deepest joy of life and awaken his divine nature. At night the stars can remind us of what is infinite and eternal in us and in the world. Whatever way they are drawn to wonder or pray, what matters is the attitude always bring to this intimate exchange, if our prayers are sincere rather than just a mental repetition.
is always through the heart that our prayers are heard, even if you first make the connection on our feet or hands. It is what we really feel the suffering of the earth, feel the need? Do we feel this connection with the creation, the way in which we are a part of this beautiful and suffering be? And our prayers are with life, a living stream that flows from our heart. Here, every step, every touch, will be a prayer for the land, a reminder of what is sacred. We are part of the Earth to its creator, crying in their time of need
