EPILEPSY









Epilepsy are a group of disorders of cerebral
functions characterized by cerebral neurons. Epilepsy can occur at any age. It
is a most common neurological disorder affecting 0.5-2% of the population.

It can be defined as dysfunctioning of neurological
functions. These need not to be always convulsive, it may be manifested by
other changes in the neurological functions, i.e., sensory, cognitive,
emotional events.




Symptoms




Epilepsy can effect you neurological system. it is
generally caused by dysfunctioning in your brain, it affect any process your
brain coordinates . its symptoms are as follows:-

1. ·       
   A person who is suffering from epilepsy
   may have memory related problems they may have temporary confusions.


2. ·       
   They will have difficulty in speaking in
   will be unsuccessful to spell put the spellings correctly.


3. ·       
   If epilepsy attack occurs then person
   will lose control on their movements of arms and legs. They will have jerking
   movements in their several body parts.


4. ·       
   Person will lose his consciousness or
   awareness.


5. ·       
   Many psychic symptoms will also be
   visible.

Causes




The likely cause of epilepsy depends on the age of
the patient and its types.

1. ·       
   Acute infections:- many acute infections
   are responsible for its cause like, meningitis, encephalitis, toxoplasmosis,
   cerebral abscess, AIDS.


2. ·       
   Head injury or trauma:- many accidents
   can be another cause for this attack. If any person is being injured on his head
   during any car accident then it can also be one of the cause for epilepsy.


3. ·       
   Familial or genetic disorders:- some
   people may have epilepsy as their genetic disorder. They may inherit this
   problem in genes from parents.


4. ·       
   Brain damage:- tumors and strokes can
   damage your brain and your brain become week and hence it is also a cause of
   epilepsy. Stroke is major cause of epilepsy.


5. ·       
   Birth injury:- babies are very small and
   are very sensitive to their environment. They could be easily get infected by
   their mother in womb. If mother is not careful for her diet then also baby can
   be infected. Baby can have brain damage due to any injury to mother in her
   womb.


6. ·       
   Alcoholism:- consumption of alcohol can
   also be one of its cause. If any one is too much addicted to alcohol then it is
   very dangerous for them. It show its direct effect on your nervous system.

Treatments

1. ·       
   Drug therapy:- A single seizure is not
   an indication for drug therapy unless a second attack follows closely. Drug
   treatment should definitely be considered after two seizures, and in some cases
   physician start therapy in a single unprovoked seizure with abnormal EEG and
   positive family history.


2. ·       
   Use of antileptic drug:- several
   effective drugs are available to cure epilepsy. These drugs stabilize the
   neuronal membranes and promote the inhibitory activity of neurotransmitters.
   Drug therapy should be monitored by plasma levels of the drug.


3. ·       
   Efficacy, safety, choice of drug regimen
   and its withdrawal:- drug selection depends on the seizure type. Suitability of
   drugs varies from patient to patient, hence treatment is individualized by
   keeping in view its efficacy and safety.


4. ·       
   Surgical treatment:- surgery is
   contemplated when there is a single well defined seizure focus particularly in
   the temporal lobe.
