On Thursday, the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and forestry agreed on a new bill for the labeling of foods with genetically modified ingredients. The committee has been trying for several months to get a bill passed before the labeling law Vermont enters into force on 1 July

US Committee Chairman Senate Agriculture Pat Roberts, and member Debbie Stabenow issued a statement , calling the bill "an important way forward represents a real commitment.

The bill would give the Department of Agriculture US two years to write the rules on labeling.

In late February, Roberts introduced another bill , who tried to create a federal standard for voluntary labeling of GM foods. Roberts SB 2609, or the Law of Biotechnology labeling solutions, have blocked efforts by states mandatory labeling.

In March, the bill failed to reach the 60 votes necessary for a procedural vote, with 49 votes in favor and 48 votes against.

Roberts bill was similar to insurance and food Labelling Act, which passed the House in June 2015, but precise issue ultimately failed amid strong opposition.

The bipartisan proposal is supported by certain groups of the food industry who believe state like Vermont accounts will result in higher costs for agriculture, businesses and consumers.
"This bipartisan agreement assures consumers across the country can obtain clear and consistent information about their food and beverage ingredients and avoids a patchwork of labeling laws been confusing and costly," Pamela Bailey, president of the Grocery Manufacturers Association, the biggest lobbyist in the food sector told the Associated Press .
Wenonah Hauter, executive director of Food & Water Watch, said the new bill deserves the DARK Law name because it will prevent consumers from having "clear labels and on-package" as required by law Vermont .
"However, this agreement Senators Stabenow and Roberts does not even come close, and instead requires that consumers have smart phones and cell phone signal to know what they are buying," Hauter he said in a statement .

"This agreement seems to be designed to ensure that large food processing companies and the biotechnology industry continue to profit by misleading consumers."
Vermont Governor Peter Shumlin and Senator Bernie Sanders both spoke against the new measure.

The key argument seems to be that the new bill would not have labels as clear as the law of Vermont.

A recent report by the National Academy of Sciences, Engineering, Medicine and came to the conclusion GM foods pose no health risk or the environment.

Critics point to report conflicts of interest among researchers of the National Academy of Sciences and biotechnology companies involved in the creation of transgenic crops.

The organization of environmental monitoring Food and Water Watch released its own report, which points to the possible influence of the same organizations that benefit from the growth of genetic engineering of food.
