The experiment Park rat

in 1970, Canadian psychologist Bruce K. Alexander and colleagues at Simon Fraser University in British Columbia conducted a study that directly challenged the common notion that drugs are themselves the cause of addiction.

They put rats in small separate cages, each with two water dispensers; one filled with pure water and the other with water mixed with heroin or cocaine.

The rats end up pressing the lever dispensing drugs compulsively and again, to the point that most of the food choices.

Very soon starve to death. It sounds like the typical drug addict behavior, right?

But the study does not end there. Alexandre and his team built what could be called a "Rat paradise."

Instead of isolating the rats in small separate cages, which allow you to interact with each other in a 200 times larger environment than a standard laboratory cage - with lots of food, toys, wheels, and space to mate.

Your behavior and decisions changed drastically.

The rats in Rat Park withstood the drugged water and pure water picked instead. Even already addicted rats weaned themselves off their addiction after they were transferred from cages to Rat Park.

This raises the question: What really was addicted rats hopeless, or just unhappy? They were reacting to the drug itself, or for confined spaces, and the environment depressing, isolated?

modern society: the antithesis to human happiness

The same question should be asked about humans. Perhaps not the addictive drug itself that some are, but the fact that this is a temporary sick and depressing society we have built for ourselves escape.

The authorities continue to glorify drug war strict laws, education based on fear and severe punishment for drug use ... regardless completely how the very structure of our society is designed for unhappiness.

Think about this: the standard human life is to spend the best years of our boring lives of our mind in school just to prepare for a job that is likely to hate, and then retire at 60, when we are too old and tired to do the things we wanted to realize.

I do not know about you, but this seems much to a small cage in which there is no time or space to enjoy ourselves, to act on our deepest vocation, and feel a sense of community among humans - to believe is the key to human happiness and fulfillment.


This does not mean that the choice of the drug on reality is the right decision, but it is essentially the same reasonable so that the poor rats decision to go to "feel good" chemicals instead of staying sober inside a prison.

Both rat and human addicted to drugs are hurting and pain ... need compassion and understanding, not punishment.

Interestingly, Bruce Alexander discovery 's was ignored and suppressed for many years.

Maybe because taking a good look at our own human environment - instead of monitoring our reactions to it - can trigger the revolution that those in power fear.

The difference between our human society and a rat cage is we have a choice.

We can continue to live by the rules even though they make us miserable. We can keep our feelings with substances escaping to better deal with things as they are.

Or ... we can turn to each other and realize that we who move this whole society.
