Tilapia , the third most consumed fish in the United States, is under fire.

A week ago, a new study found that a new strain of the virus are currently attacking wild and farmed tilapia in Colombia and Ecuador.

An international team of researchers has identified the virus as the virus Tilapia Lake (TiLV), more closely related to a family of viruses called Orthomyxoviridae influenza.

"Our findings suggest that the lake virus tilapia is a new virus, and confirm that there is a global threat to aquaculture of tilapia," says lead co-author Eran Bacharach, a virologist at the University of Tel Aviv in Israel.

When a healthy fish exposed to TiLV, which will lead to the disease that coincided with what has been seen in other countries, such as Israel. The virus causes lethargy, peeling skin and kidney problems in infected fish, which eventually kills them.

Because viruses from the two sites share nearly identical sequences of genes, researchers thought to originate from the same source. But how the virus traveled between Israel and Ecuador, and in which direction, is still a mystery.

"Now we need a better understanding of the epidemiology of the virus, their biological properties, infectivity and transmission routes," says Margy Villanueva. She is the leader of the National Health Program aquaculture species of the Colombian Agricultural Institute.
