Zolav®: New, Promising Antibiotic for Treatment of Acne

A new study published in the Journal of Drug Design, Development and Therapy has shown the effectiveness of Zolav®, a new antibiotic cream developed by the Australian Pharmaceutical Research Company, Boulos & Cooper Pharmaceuticals in conjunction with AXD Pty Ltd, an Australian private Consulting Firm.

Zolav® is seen as a low-risk alternative to Isotretinoin, a derivative of Vitamin A. Available under brand names such as Accutane, Absorica, Claravis, Zenatane, and Myorisan, isotretinoin is “currently the standard of care for treatment” of acne according to the authors of the paper, but it has a major downside in its teratogenic activity.

This means that isotretinoin can interfere with embryo and fetus development and even cause birth defects; it is thus not suitable for use during pregnancy.

According to Dr. Ramiz Boulos, the CEO of Boulos & Cooper Pharmaceuticals, “Zolav® has shown to have low toxicity to cells and antioxidant properties”.

This novel acne treatment antibiotic cream not only reduce P. acne infection but also reduces the redness associated with acne breakouts.

The study sought to determine the effectiveness of Zolav® in controlling acne breakout and determine “minimum inhibitory concentration of Zolav(®) against Propionibacterium acnes”.

The results showed “a minimum inhibitory concentration of 2 µg/mL against three strains [of P. acne bacteria] with no cytotoxicity and no mutagenicity observed at the highest concentrations tested, 30 µM and 1,500 µg/plate, respectively”.

The researcher concluded that Zolav® is an effective novel treatment for acne. Dr. Boulos thus said, “These are promising results and provide persons affected by acne with a new treatment option that is low risk”.

It may however be a few years before this new acne treatment hits the market according to the research team.
