SCIENTISTS CONFIRM THAT CANCER SPREADS DUE TO CHRONIC STRESS

SCIENTISTS DISCOVERED THAT CHRONIC STRESS PHYSICALLY CHANGES THE LYMPHATIC SYSTEM. THESE CHANGES ENABLE CANCER TO SPREAD THROUGH THE BODY QUICKLY AND EASILY. THIS RESEARCH WAS CARRIED OUT ON LAB MICE.

EVEN THOUGH THIS STUDY HAS NOT BEEN DONE ON HUMANS, IT WILL HELP SCIENTISTS TO UNDERSTAND HOW STRESS, KNOW TO INFLUENCE THE PROGRESSION OF CANCER, ACTUALLY HELPS THE CANCEROUS CELLS TO SURVIVE AND SPREAD.

The scientists that carried out this research, even found a medicine that prevents this changes in the body caused by chronic stress. The medicine is now being tested on women with breast cancer.

The researchers explain that a patient that has just been diagnosed with cancer cannot avoid being stressed. Yet, this research can help doctors change their approach towards treating and taking care of cancer patients.

Cancer spreads in two ways – through the blood vessels or the lymphatic system. The lymphatic system consists of tubes that drain fluids from the body’s tissues into the blood. When the fluids get out, they form secondary tumors that can be deadly. This is why cancer must be removed as soon as possible when it is detected.

It was already known that stress hormones induce the formation of blood vessels which allows cancerous cells to spread easily thorough more paths. However, before this research, it was not known that stress also affects the lymphatic system.

In this research, the scientists exposed the mice to extreme stress that equals the amount of stress that a person feels when taking care of a sick person and does not have enough resources to do that. So, the amount of stress that the mice were exposed to is much larger than the amount of stress that a person experiences in one bad day.

The cancer spread in the mice very quickly since the stress hormone called adrenaline activated the sympathetic nervous system to the level of lymph formation.

Adrenaline also changed the lymph vessels, which allowed the cancerous cells to spread easily and quickly. So, the cancerous cells had new ways to spread and also spread quicker than usual.

Luckily, propranolol, a beta-blocker that can be found on the market, can stop these effects of stress on the lymphatic system.

Beta-blockers have been used in medicine for a long time. Therefore, the researchers tried to use them to slow down the spreading of cancerous cells.

The research with beta-blockers was carried out on 1.000 patients with breast cancer. After 7 years of research, it was determined that cancerous cells moved far less through the lymphatic system and disseminated less in the organs among patients that were taking beta-blockers.

Nowadays, a study with the beta-blocker propranolol is carried out on women with breast cancer in Melbourne. The success of the research will bring an effective and cheap way to stop cancer spreading.
