Polish Pyramids: Ruins of Megalithic Tombs from the Time of Stonehenge Discovered in Poland

ancient origins

A group of monumental megalithic tombs have been discovered in Western Pomerania in Poland. Because of the enormous nature of the structures, often they called the 'Polish' pyramids.

According to Radio Szczecin , the discovery of more than a dozen massive megalithic tombs became for a research and conservation program conducted by Dr. Agnieszka Matuszewska university department of Archaeology of Szczecin, in collaboration with Marek Schiller Dębno. The site is located near Dolice, West Pomerania. aim of the researchers began with the introduction, storage, processing and display of geographic data. The discovery in Dolice seems to be greater than researchers expected.

The earthen structures is they made in a form of an elongated triangle, surrounded by a large stone blocks. The structures standing 3 meters (9.8 feet) high, and were 150 meters (492.1 feet) long and 6-15 meters (19.7-49.2 feet) wide. The place where they find it is difficult to examine. The surface is covered by a forest of age. Small sites archaeologists have discovered fragments of pottery and other artifacts. The tombs were created by the funnel community Beaker culture, who lived on earth from the 5th to the 3rd millennium BC.

The mounds contain individual burials. According to the researchers, people who were buried in the graves were important tribal elders. Other information may be available after the researchers summarized data and explore the sites. So far, research has been based on non-invasive methods

Dr. Matuszewska told PAP science and scholarship in Poland.
For our analysis we used the Isok project (National System computer Protection against extraordinary threats). Thanks to the database that we created and systematically updated, it was possible to select places to test that method. The area near Dolice is certainly the most interesting, we have selected at least a dozen possible megalithic tombs. In the course of verification in the field we have clearly confirmed the presence of 18 megalithic tombs Cuyavia class, a much larger number of what is known from the literature.
The discovery was made with the use of modern technology such as digital terrain models (DTM) and three-dimensional mapping of the area prepared on the basis of ALS (Airborne Laser Scanning). The methods allowed researchers to pinpoint objects that were known previously, but also to discover new graves. They were given the opportunity to verify their knowledge of the field and try to restore the structures and objects. Archaeologists also documented the degree of destruction and planned the possible protection of forest areas covering the monuments.

The megalithic structures in Poland are preserved only in forest areas. Others were destroyed by the growth of agriculture. Since medieval times, Poland produce food that supported barns across Europe. Apart from this, people in the 19th century using elements of structures to build their own houses, roads and other buildings.

The discovery in Dolice is not the only building of its kind in Poland. During the same expedition, four tombs were discovered in Ploszkowo. However, the most famous structures are in Sarnow and Wietrzychowice .

Apart from being examples of the fascinating heritage of the people who once lived there, the monuments contain a mystery compared to Britain's Stonehenge. There are some similarities between the mounds discovered in Poland and found in Western Europe. For example, the structures are from the same era as Stonehenge. Polish researchers also discovered a settlement dating from 3635-3370 BC in Bronocice near Krakow (southern Poland). Moreover, there is an underground mine chert created by people from c. 3500 -. 3300 BC located in Krzemionki Opatowskie, Swietokrzyskie Mountains

The operation to save the megalithic tombs began in 1936 when the famous researchers Jazdzewski and Kostrzewski decided about the importance of their protection. At the same time, in a place called Biskupin, arcchaeologists discovered a wooden town dating back to the 8th century BC. This led researchers to realize that there was an important and powerful culture of the time.

Previously, propaganda pushed researchers to describe people in the past as a Slavic tribe who were ancestors Polish Christians. However, research by German archaeologists showed that the culture that created the megalithic tombs were connected with the Germans in place. There is also a theory that ancient peoples were Celts.
