slopes of a mountainous region. And it is believed that this material may be snow methane condenses in the atmosphere, which rests on the top of the mountain and extending over the reflective material. "That this material layers only the upper slopes of the peaks suggests methane ice can act like water in the Earth's atmosphere, condensing as frost high," said John Stansberry, a member the scientific team of New Horizons space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore, Maryland, said in a statement . This mountain region is in Cthulhu Regio, a large dark area 3,000 kilometers (1,850 miles) long and 750 kilometers (450 miles) wide, extending almost halfway around the Ecuador of Pluto. Their dark appearance is believed to be due to dark Tholins, complex molecules which are formed when methane is exposed to sunlight. While the ice has seen elsewhere before, this is the first case of a frost or snow on the surface being theorized. The image was taken by the New Horizons spacecraft from a distance of 33,900 kilometers (21,100 miles) during its flyby on July 14, 2015. (source)
