Scientists Discover Extraordinary Jurassic Fossil Bed In Argentina

id = " Paleontologists in southern Argentina have uncovered a vast network of fossils dating from period Jurassic , allowing them to rebuild an ecosystem that has been "frozen" in time of about 140 to 160 million years. The discovery occurred in the town of La Bajada, in a region of Patagonia southeast called the Deseado Massif, where recent soil erosion in an area covering some 60,000 square kilometers (23,000 square miles) has exposed fossils . All samples have been exceptionally well preserved through silicification , which refers to the process of becoming saturated in a chemical called silica, usually derived from volcanic material. Since the period and the place from which the fossils originate is associated with intense volcanic activity, the researchers suggest that "silicification probably occurred while the organisms were alive or shortly after his death." Since then, I have remained locked in chert material sedimentary rock composed of silicon dioxide retains soft-bodied organisms. Like amber, this has enabled scientists to obtain precious glimpses into the evolution of terrestrial environments. However, reporting their findings in the journal Ameghiniana , the study authors explain that the diversity of fossils in La Bajada ensures that yields the discovery of more detailed information about Jurassic ecosystems than any other silex deposit ever discovered. The collection of more than 1,000 samples of La Bajada in 2014, the researchers note that the incredible abundance of fossilized plants and microorganisms allows them to reconstruct the main features of the Jurassic landscape, while identifying relationships within the local food chain. For example, the distribution of algae normally associated with water, either deep or shallow presents an overview of aquatic subenvironments present during the Jurassic period. Furthermore, the position of certain fungi and other microorganisms in relation to host plants provides information on how these organisms feed on organic matter, with clear evidence of parasitic commitments. The huge amount of well-preserved plant material provides a detailed view of the species that existed at the time, and their evolution over a period of around 20 million years. This, in turn, allows researchers to identify the evolutionary roots of many plants and modern ecosystems. For example, among the species found in La Bajada various types of ferns belong to the family Osmundaceae . Previously, scientists have struggled to determine whether fossilized fragments of these ferns found elsewhere represented different stages of development of the same taxon , or were, in fact, different from one other in evolutionary terms. By studying the specimens discovered in La Bajada, researchers hope to fill at least some of these gaps in our knowledge of how these species evolved.
