A recent study by Dr. Mary Cushman of the University of Vermont College found that people with a certain blood type actually have a much higher risk of dementia.
What is dementia?
Dementia is a general term that describes a number of different brain degenerative conditions that occur with advancing age. Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease are the most common types of dementia, but overall, dementia can be any type of condition that causes mental capacity to decline. At first, the early symptoms of dementia only seem harmless, and usually consist of occasionally forgetting an appointment or have trouble following driving instructions.
However, as it progresses, cognitive function begins to decline severely. People with dementia may end completely forgetting friends or family members, and may even become unable to speak if they are affected word processing centers of the brain. Without a properly functioning brain, people with dementia may experience complete personality change or lose the ability to think critically and solve problems.
What are the differences between blood types?
blood types are classified based on antigens on the surface of blood cells. For example, blood type A means that the body accepts only type antigens, antigens and attack type B blood type O have neither A nor B antigens and blood group AB has both type A and type B antigens. The human body is very complex, so these antigens end up affecting many other actions within the body, including blood clotting, cholesterol and hormone levels.
