Why Most Cancer Isn’t Due To "Bad Luck"

So what causes cancer: bad luck, or lifestyle and avoidable environmental factors
Why unlucky?
The study of "bad luck" for Tomasetti and Vogelstein of Johns Hopkins University, was based on two facts.
First, it is not the case that is equally likely to occur in all different body organs and tissues of cancer. Some cancers, such as colon cancer, are relatively common, while others, such as bone cancer, are much rarer, for reasons that the objective was discovered.
Second, the various tissue types have different numbers of dividing cells, called stem cells which serve to replace cells that have become old or damaged. How often these gap varies depending on which part of the body are and how often to be replaced cells.

In the latest study, researchers at Stony Brook University (SBU) in New York took another look at the data used by Tomasetti and Vogelstein. They found that, even when one considers the total number of stem cell divisions, some cancers were even more likely to occur than others. The most common cancers, it follows, must have some additional external cause, such as environment, lifestyle or genetic makeup.
When they reanalyzed the data on this basis, they found that for many cancers, including some of the most common, such as cancer lung and liver, less than 10% risk was attributable to random errors copy.
What to believe?
The two studies have much in common, but differ in the amount of intrinsic and extrinsic contribute to cancer risk. Note that the SBU team have supported their arguments with evidence that was not included in the study Tomasetti and Vogelstein.
First, the team SBU highlight the large amount of evidence pointing to a substantial contribution of environmental factors and lifestyle risk Of cancer. For example, it is well known that colon cancer is relatively rare in Japan, but Japanese immigrants in the US and their descendants have an even higher risk of colon cancer than Americans of European origin.
The SBU team also examined the types of mutations that lead various cancers. Some mutations are seen more often in tumors of older patients. This fits the model of "bad luck", where the key factors behind the occurrence of cancer are errors that accumulate each time a cell divides.
However, cancers also contain many other types of mutations that can occur due to specific carcinogens, for example, mutations sunlight induced in cancer skin. How often these changes occur much more cause cancer depends on the amount of exposure a person has to carcinogens, rather than age.
