German measles or Rubella has
finally been eliminated from North and South America.




This disease once infected
millions of people in the Western Hemisphere. Worldwide, about 120,000 children
are born each year with severe birth defects due to rubella. The last endemic
case in the Americas was confirmed in Argentina in 2009.




North and South American
became the first World Health Organization region to eliminate rubella.




“Some regions are still not
close enough to set firm target dates, so there is no chance that the disease
will be eliminated worldwide before 2020,” said Dr. Susan E. Reef, team lead
for rubella at the CDC’s global immunization division.




Rubella causes a milder form of fever,
rashes, and neck swelling. Pregnant women who develop rubella can have a baby
who is blind, deaf or with severe brain damage.




To prevent rubella, children should be vaccinated
with MMR vaccine (Measles-mumps- rubella). The first dose is given at nine
months old, and a second dose is given at 15 months.




The DOH offers free vaccination in the health
centers.

The lesson: Bring your child to the doctor or health
center to get MMR vaccination at 9 months and 15 months.
