Located near the historic center of Sintra, Portugal is the Quinta da Regaleira- a spectacular estate is in a protected world heritage landscape. While thousands of tourists flock to the castle each year to admire the unique architecture of the Quinta de Regaleira which combines Gothic, Egyptian, Moorish and Renaissance features, one of its most fascinating features is below ground - a pair of wells spiral the depths of the earth. The wells were never used, or intended for collecting water. Instead, these towers mysterious underground secret initiation rites were used.

The cultural landscape on which the Quinta da Regaleira sits back thousands of years. There are archaeological sites in the area date back to the early Neolithic period (fifth millennium BC) and extending throughout the Iron Age (4th - 2nd centuries BC). The Roman occupation of the region began in the second half of the second century BC and later was conquered by the Arabs. Sintra finally yielded to Afonso Henriques, first king of Portugal after the conquest of Lisbon in 1147. Afonso built an imposing Royal Palace there that served as a summer residence until the late 16th century After the suppression of the Templars in 1181, land they passed to the Order of Christ. In the late 15th century, Sintra was associated with Leonor, one of the greatest queens of Portugal. Successive monarchs spent much time in the city, but after the restoration of 1640, Sintra lost this link and the royal palace only served as a prison for Afonso VI. Unfortunately, most of the architectural heritage of the region was destroyed in an earthquake in 1755, although there are some judicial and military buildings unique examples of religious architecture and archaeological sites.

The Quinta da Regaleira is an estate that is within this historical landscape. It has had many owners over the years, each contributing their own personal touch. But it was not until 1904, after having been sold to António Augusto Carvalho Monteiro, a wealthy Portuguese entomologist, that the farm was transformed into a unique palace decorated with symbolic carvings associated with Freemasonry, the Templars and the Rosicrucians.

La Quinta de Regaleira estate, which is sometimes referred to as "Palace of Monteiro the Millionaire" after its last owner, consists a palace and a chapel with exquisite decor including frescoes, stained glass, stucco and luxury.
