10 Eating Rules French Children Know (But Most Americans Don't)

Rebeca PLANTIER

How do the French eat, age, clothing, raise their children and live in general is a real talking point these days. Therefore, as an American mother of three French middle child, I thought I'd add my bit to the conversation.

I lived in France before becoming a father, but eventually he went to my children taught me everything I need to know about eating like a French person: eating and stay slim and healthy, not just what you eat, but how, when and why. Yes, the French enjoy junk food occasionally, and sometimes eaten between meals, but people not only loose every day. There is a code of conduct for food, for large and small people alike. Here in 10 lessons fast life, it is what my children taught me about food.

1. Eat, but not all day.

Three meals a more traditional day "Gouter" of children after school or appetizer, which can be a pain au chocolat, fruit or applesauce.

When rolling meals, eaten with pleasure because you are hungry.

2. eat real food and . generous portions

eating three meals a day and no grazing in the middle means that you can eat well when you sit at the table - and that includes a starter, main course, cheese and dessert. Portions are generous without going overboard. A sample menu of noon yesterday:

Course: Lentil salad

Main course: Roasted chicken, green beans

cheese course: vanilla yogurt

Dessert: Apple and orange slices ... and that was in the public school cafeteria

3. Choose water

.. overall, the French do not drink your calories. At lunchtime, water (either with or without gas) is the drink of choice. Adults can opt for one or two glasses of wine, but the glasses are not the size of fishbowls.

4. Sit.

is rare to see people eating the walking or shopping. No cup holders on carts, or even in most cars. You eat at the table, not in front of the TV or computer, then leave the table and do something else.

5. lighter at night. Eat

lunchtime is the main event. Dinner is usually light: soups, salads, an omelet, a simple pasta dish. Dessert could be a yoghurt or fruit. And sleep much better.

6. When the kitchen is closed is closed.

Without grazing after dinner.

7. Know your limit, and then stops.

Set meal times to help tune when you are really hungry or full.

8. Test their food, guess the ingredients.

the French do the same as eating fabulous food and drink wonderful wine, they like to talk about it. Discussing things taste, ingredients and how did heightens awareness; Children like to participate in the conversation. They learn about real food and where it comes from.

9. What's Cooking?

Along with an interest in the ingredients comes an interest in the actual process of cooking food. With a little training, my 2-year-old peeled apples collected with their class and happily joined to make a cake. Children love to help vegetables or fresh pasta put into the pot, or make a chocolate cake from scratch. As part of the process increases appreciation, and build good habits for life

10. Eating well is not a sin.; it is a pleasure

Eating the food. - no matter how simple or how to build - is one of the great pleasures of life, not an endless guilt. Especially when moderation. Once when we were visiting family in the US, a waitress asked my French husband if he was "done working on it," referring to his food dish. His answer: "Eating is a pleasure, Miss, does not work!"
