It has been confirmed that France will extend its moratorium on the cultivation of genetically modified (GM) corn Monsanto MON810 within its borders, despite a recent ruling by the French Council of State that the ban on violates longstanding European Union (EU) law. As reported in a recent article by AFP GMWatch.org translated into English, French head of state, Francois Hollande, made an official public announcement that the suspension will in fact be extended in order to ensure the integrity of the agricultural system of the nation.

France enacted a temporary ban on MON810 more than six years ago, citing a number of environmental threats posed by unproven "Franken". The decision came after the European Commission (EC), of which France is a member, did not suspend the approval of the harvest after studies had shown that transgenic maize pose "significant risks" to the environment.
