A red tide is unsightly and unattractive, with brown water. But at night, during this unusual phenomenon caused by a bloom of plankton, the waves are a bright blue color, almost neon. This wonderfully surreal scene played out almost every night along the beaches of San Diego for several weeks, attracting viewers with cameras and video recorders.
The bioluminescence is caused by a chemical reaction involving polyedrum Lingulodinium phytoplankton, and movement of waves. In a Los Angeles Times story , the Scripps Institution of Oceanography Professor Peter J. Franks said Phytoplankton:
