Why Do We Feel Lonely in an Over-Connected World?
by Anna LeMindThe Power of Mind
The world has never been so connected as it is now. communication technologies and the Internet have made it possible to keep in touch with anyone, no matter where they live. Today, it is probably impossible to find a person who does not use social networking and instant messaging applications, which have become an integral part of our lives. Many people can not even imagine their daily routine without online communication and feel incomplete without chat with your friends and do not see their updates in the Facebook feed st least once a day. Basically we are never alone, and yet, we are more alone than ever
This is not just a claim. - studies show that the number of people who feel lonely is constantly increasing. For example, a survey by the Mental Health Foundation found that one in ten people in the UK often feel lonely, while 48% of respondents believe that modern people are increasingly more and more alone.
seems that loneliness is a real epidemic in our society. But why do we feel this way, while numerous channels of communication with other human beings are available to us at any minute of every day? To answer the question in the title of the article asks, first, let's find out what really is loneliness. While the dictionary suggests that it is a state of being alone paired with feelings of sadness and isolation, loneliness is much more complex than that.
Have you ever been in a company of people who do not have much in common with? Or maybe in the company of strangers / acquaintances who were good friends with each other and did not pay much attention to you? If you have been in similar situations, it is accepted that at the time, felt alone without being alone
This is what really is loneliness -. A lack of connection and understanding, regardless of whether they are alone or do not. In fact, this feeling may be even more intense when you are among people who do not resonate rather than when you're alone. Let me quote Robin Williams here: "... I used to think that the worst thing in life was to end only Not worst thing in life is to end up with people who make you feel alone"
So is not the reason why we are only in a connected world we live in today? Popular culture and our over-reliance on social media basically have made us believe that human communication is a matter of quantity, not quality
To demonstrate this contradiction, let me ask you two simple questions:. ¿ how many Facebook friends you have and how many of them have a very deep connection with? I bet most of you have hundreds of Facebook friends and yet can name only a few individuals who are really close.
As seen, what we lack in the modern world is a deep connection and significant with others, which inevitably makes us feel alone. We are constantly surrounded by people (if not physically, at least virtually) and yet rarely feel really close to someone mentally and emotionally.
If you think about it, it makes sense why human communication it has become so superficial, since all the dominant culture is based on the shallowness and superficiality. It makes us believe that all we need is to satisfy our physical needs and fulfill our selfish desires.
In summary, remember that the only way to avoid loneliness is not about being and communication with people all the time. This is to establish a deep connection with the right along with being a self-sufficient individual who does not need the approval of others.
