Time to break with IBS.
An estimated 35 million people in the US suffering from irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), a chronic disease that weighs on many of us with gas, bloating, abdominal pain, cramping or altered bowel movements. It can be especially frustrating when IBS symptoms seem to occur at the most inopportune moments.
The diet low in FODMAP created at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia, has been shown to help about 75 percent of people with IBS and other functional bowel disorders, such as diarrhea and bloating functional.
A diet low in carbohydrates eliminates FODMAP highly fermentable and osmotic which are the most common culprits gastrointestinal problems.
If you are wondering where that strange word FODMAP comes sounds, here's what the acronym means:
fermentable
oligosaccharides (fructans, galacto [GOs])
The disaccharides (lactose)
The monosaccharides (excess fructose)
and
The polyols (sorbitol, mannitol)
Within of the above parentheses are sugars and fibers present in many foods we eat every day, such as those found in dairy products, wheat, various fruits, vegetables, beans, and some sweeteners.
FODMAPs are fermentable because they can be poorly absorbed in the small intestine, leaving them to microbes (tiny organisms, living, such as bacteria, fungi and archaea) living naturally in the colon to feed. Microbes produce gas as a result, causing swelling, belching, and flatulence.
FODMAPs also tend to be osmotic, pulling water into the intestines, which can cause cramping, diarrhea, and swelling. The combination of water and drawing in gas production sets the stage for trapped air and, depending on the speed of your digestive tract, diarrhea and / or constipation.
Dairy products: milk, ice cream, yogurt
Fruits: apples, blueberries, cherries, mangoes, pears, watermelon
Vegetables: artichokes, asparagus, cauliflower, garlic, onions, mushrooms
Grains: wheat, barley, rye, inulin
Protein: cashews, black beans, red beans, pistachios, tofu , soybean
Sweeteners agave syrup, high fructose corn syrup, honey, mannitol, sorbitol
If you find yourself suffering IBS symptoms, try eliminating foods high in FODMAPs 2 to 8 weeks, with the help of a dietitian-FODMAP well to soothe your digestive tract.
The FODMAP diet is similar to other elimination diets in which you can reintroduce each food group separately to expand their diet to what feels good for your body.
Although limiting foods high in FODMAPs, stick to those containing low amounts.
sources FODMAP Low to enjoy include:
dairy and dairy substitutes: lactose-free milk and yogurt, butter, cheese more (minimum lactose), almond milk, milk hemp, canned coconut milk
Fruits: strawberries, banana, kiwi, orange, blueberries, cantaloupe, lemon, lime
vegetables: peppers, eggplant, carrots, kale, potato, tomato, zucchini
Grains: corn tortillas, oatmeal, quinoa, rice, some gluten-free breads and pastas
Protein: almonds, beef, chicken, eggs, fish, firm tofu, peanuts, seeds

Why not eliminate these foods high FODMAP for good?
FODMAPs can exacerbate IBS symptoms, but some fermentation and osmosis is healthy for our gastrointestinal tract. In fact, foods like garlic and onions have been studied for their role in the increase of beneficial microbes in the gut.
Many FODMAP sources are very nutritious and should not be avoided unless it is poorly tolerated.
So if your IBS is affecting your daily life, you may want to take a vacation away from FODMAPs for a while and break with IBS forever.
