Marijuana helps eliminate proteins toxic related to Alzheimer's disease, according to a new study by the Salk Institute.

The compounds of marijuana as tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) could help delay the onset of modern disease and the fight to eradicate Alzheimer's disease.

The Daily Caller reports

the researchers found that tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and other compounds, helped remove one of the key substances that are thought to trigger the onset of Alzheimer's disease: amyloid beta -protein. THC is the chemical in marijuana that gives users a high, can also act as a painkiller. Beta-amyloid protein accumulates in nerve cells with aging time of formation of plaques in the brain.

"Although other studies have provided evidence that cannabinoids may be neuroprotective against the symptoms of Alzheimer's disease, we believe our study is the first to demonstrate that cannabinoids affect both inflammation and accumulation amyloid beta in nerve cells, " says professor David Schubert , lead author of the article.

The study authors used cultured neurons in a laboratory to test the effects of THC. Although the study is inconclusive and tests have not been conducted in humans, the research will be useful in the investigation of how to mitigate the effects and the onset of Alzheimer's disease. He said Schubert would have to be carried out for before THC-like compounds can be used as a therapy clinical trials.
