Sleep is an absolutely essential part of our lives. These important hours of sleep each night give us the rest we need to feed through today, and that is why sleep deprivation can have serious repercussions on their physical and mental state.so when Russian scientists conducted an experiment that tried to keep people during consecutive weeks, the results were absolutely chilling.
In the late 1940s, five men who were considered enemies of the state by the Russian government were selected to participate in a Sleep deprivation experiment. The aim was to use small doses of an experimental gas that would supposedly eliminate the need for sleep in humans.
Subjects were kept in a sealed environment so that researchers would not be exposed to the gas, and the prisoners had only microphones communicate with. They were provided with books, a toilet and running water, enough food to last each of them a full month, and a cot without bedding.
During the first three days, everything went well, with prisoners gives them the false promise that if they cooperated and did not sleep for 30 days, which would be released. As all of their actions and dialogue were controlled, researchers noted the prisoners that open on past traumas. After four days, the talks got even darker.
On the fifth day, the prisoners began to exhibit paranoia and complaining about the latest circumstances and decisions they brought them here. Instead of talking to each other, they began to whisper into their microphones. Apparently, they thought they could win the trust of the experimenters to betray and deliver his fellow prisoners.
By the tenth day, the screaming started. For three hours straight, an inmate ran back and forth across the length of the room, shouting loudly. After his voice began to weaken, which only produces squeaks, which doctors attribute to the breaking of the vocal cords.
Interestingly, the other prisoners did not even seem to respond to the cries.
Soon , experimenters were concerned that they were not hearing anything from inside the camera. On the fourteenth day, they did something unexpected: an intercom to try to get some kind of response from prisoners are used. They explained that if they cooperated, the prisoners would be released. "I do not want to be released," said a quiet voice.
On the fifteenth day, the researchers removed the stimulant gas chamber and replaced with fresh air. In response, prisoners prayed for the gas back on. The soldiers arrived to recover the prisoners, but soon discovered that only four of the five test subjects were still breathing. The food has not been touched in five days. Pieces of flesh were missing from the thighs and the dead man's chest, later found clogging the drain, flooding the room with four inches of water.
Even those subjects who were still alive were missing skin and flesh - wounds that appeared to be mostly self inflicted. Even the most experienced soldiers were afraid to take the body away.
