MUMPS

Mumps is contagious disease caused by a virus that
passes from one person to another saliva, nasal secretions, and close personal
contact.
The main symptom of mumps is swelling of the
salivary glands. It directly effects the organ that produces saliva that is,
parotid gland. We have total three sets of salivary glands on each side of
your face, located behind and below your ears.
Symptoms
Virus of mumps doesn’t show its symptoms rapidly
however it takes about 2 weeks to expose.

Body aches - ·
Headache - ·
Loss of appetite - ·
Low-grade fever - ·
As mumps effect your salivary glands so
there will be swelling of the salivary glands after next few days. - ·
Salivary glands swell and become painful
periodically. - ·
Mumps virus can be passed to another
person from the time when you come into contact with the virus to when your
parotid glands swell. - ·
Some people doesn’t show symptoms so
fast, however they have few or no symptom.
Treatment
- Mumps is a virus hence it doesn’t respond much to
the antibiotics or medications. - ·
Patient must take complete rest when
he/she is suffering from mumps, as there will be weakness in their body. - ·
They can opt for pain relievers, such as
acetaminophen and ibuprofen, it will give relief from pain and will also bring
down your fever. - ·
You can apply cold applications like ice
packs, on your swollen glands. - ·
During fever you may have dehydration so
to prevent it you must drink plenty of water. - ·
As your glands will be swelled so eat
soft diet of soup, yogurt, and other foods that aren’t hard to chew. - ·
You must avoid alcohol or any acidic
beverages that may cause more pain in salivary glands. - ·
As this disease is contagious so you
must avoid visiting at public places.
Prevention:-
- ·
Vaccine is given at early age to all to
prevent mumps, measles, and rubella at the same time. - ·
People who work at public places or at
high-risk environment should be vaccinated against mumps. - ·
Always keep distance from person who is
infected from mumps. - ·
Always wash your hands after you visit at
public place. - ·
Always take nutritious diet and drink
plenty of water that will keep your immune system strong. - ·
Pregnant women or who are sensitive to
gelatin or neomycin shouldn’t receive the MMR vaccine.
