How To Grow Your Own Avocado Tree In a Small Garden Pot

Everyone loves avocados and they're in their prime condition in the summer. The avocado fruit is both healthy and delicious, and can be easily incorporated into your everyday diet, either alone or as a unique condiment.

Little did you know that you can actually grow your very own avocado tree in your own home using the most basic of equiptment!

Next time you are chopping it up for a salad, or you're preparing a delicious guacamole, remember not to throw the stone away. You'll need it in order to grow your own avocado trees!

People in areas with a sunny and warm climate are lucky enough to enjoy these fruits often, but since they can easily be destroyed by the cold weather, northern gardeners should follow some important tips in order to grow them at home.

Follow these simple steps to start growing your own avocado tree:

1. Estract the seed.

This is done by removing the pit from the flesh of the avocado gently. Wash it with cold water or soak the pit for several minutes and then scrub  to eliminate all the remains. You should note that you should keep the seed cover (the brown skin of the pit)

2. Pierce it

All avocado pits have two ends, its top, the end from which the sprout grows, and its bottom, where the roots grow. The top is the slightly pointier end, and the flatter one is the bottom.

3. Place the bottom in water.

In order to stimulate it to sprout, you should put the bottom in some water. It is important to determine which end is the bottom before you pierce the pit!

4. Wedge in toothpicks.

After you have soaked it in water, firmly wedge in some toothpicks. In order to leave a larger part of the avocado base soaking, try and stick the toothpicks pointing down.

Leave the seed to sprout for 3-6 weeks. You will notice a sprout coming out from the top, as well as the development of small roots at the base.

5. Pinch the top leaves.

As soon as the stem is grown for about 5-6 inches, pinch out the top set of leaves, and in a few weeks, you can expect to have new leaves and no more roots.

After some time, the sprout tail will be around 6-7 inches, and you will need to trim it in half in order to stimulate new growth.

6. It's time for potting!

Now, take a large flowerpot  8″ to 10″ across and place some good enriched potting soil to about an inch from the pot’s top.

Place the pit in a small depression you will make in the center, but you need to put it root-side down. In order to water the pit, you should generously water the soil, as it needs to be really moist.

And that's it! You'll have your very own avocados in no time with very little effort!
