In our increasingly busy lives, sleep can feel quite unproductive. But just because you are not awake, it does not mean things are not happening. To really appreciate all the complex things in your body during the eight (or, more realistically, six) hours you're out every night, artist Jan Diehm of Huffington Post created this fascinating infographic .

Laura Schocker has also given us a decay of the different stages of sleep in more detail. So what's going on?
