Hickey Removal Tricks, Meaning, and How Long Does a Hickey Last?

Having an angry hickey (lovebite) on your neck, arm or face can be pretty embarrassing and if you are in your teenage years, it can even get you grounded – and cursing too!! I have been there and I know how it feels. Continue reading to discover my best hickey removal methods and others that I have learnt from the internet.

What Are Hickies On Neck, Face, or Arm? (Definition and Meaning)

Hickies on neck

A hickey is a bruise beneath the skin caused by intense kissing, sucking, or biting (ouch!!) by a lover or partner during a romantic episode. It is not surprising therefore that some people refer to these marks as hickey bruises.

Several other names are used to refer to hickies or hickeys including lovebites, kiss marks, affection bites, and bug bites.

Hickies are no different to the blemishes that you sustain if some object moving at high speed e.g. a baseball your face or any other part of the body. They form when the act of sucking or kissing injure and cause the tiny blood vessels (capillaries) in the soft areas of the body, especially neck, arms, and face, to break open and release blood into the tissues around them.

Hickies are characterized by red to purple blotches in the affected area depending on their stage of healing. You may have just one of these or several depending on the intensity of the moment.

How Long Does a Hickey Last?

Like other bruises, hickeys heal on their own with time and without leaving behind scars, even without treatment (with the hickey removal methods described below) but one question lingers when you have one, “How long does a hickey last?”

A hickey characteristically lasts 5 to 12 days if no treatment measures are taken but it can take longer or shorter than that depending on factors such as:

  • Degree of injury: Minor hickeys translate to less damage to blood capillaries and thus less amount of blood leaked out into the surrounding tissues. Such love bites will as expected heal fast; some may even go away in just a couple days.

  • Overall health: Some people are more susceptible to bruising than others such as those taking certain medications that thin-out the blood. Good example are aspirin and anticoagulant such as warfarin (Coumadin). Ginkgo, fish oil, and other supplements may also cause bruises such as hickeys to last longer, as well as form more easily.

  • Age: According to the Mayo Clinic, older people are at higher risk of bruising (including hickeys) than their younger counterparts. This is because the skin progressively loses some of the fatty layer that cushion blood vessels against traumas e.g. kissing and sucking.

Hickey Removal Tricks to Try at Home

Hickeys are not at all painful and don’t present a health concern but adorning one of these bruises for days is another thing altogether and most people, including me, would rather skip that bit. They kind of shout to the whole world what “mischief” you have been up to.

As with other bruises, hickeys can be easily treated at home and if you like it, you can even hide them from your neck or face with makeup. Several hickey removal methods can suffice in reducing their appearance on your skin and possibly getting rid of them overnight but keep in mind that there is no miracle cure to get rid of hickeys instantly.

Ice and other Cold Treatments

Icing is my personal favorite among home remedies for hickies. I would even go ahead and vote it the best and fastest way to remove a hickey if you dared me. Used early enough, icing can help cure a hickey in as low as 1 day.

Icing (or cold compress if you like) helps to hasten the natural healing process for a hickey by constricting the small blood capillaries in the bruised area and thus stop further leaking of blood into the tissues around them. For it to be effective however this hickey removal trick needs to be used as soon as possible, preferably within 12 hours of sustaining the love bite marks.

How to Remove a Hickey Fast with the Cold Treatment Method

  1. Wrap some ice cubes in a paper towel or a washcloth. Press it against the bruised area and hold it in place for 10-15 minutes. Use this simple hickey cure several times per day over the course of the first 48 hours since the love bite developed.

  2. Another simple hickey removal trick involves using a frozen spoon. Place clean stainless steel spoons in the refrigerator or freezer for 10 minutes. Wrap the spoon with a clean washcloth to avoid ice burn and then rub it gently against the love bite to break and spread out the coagulated blood. Repeat this hickey home treatment frequently throughout the first 48 hours for fast hickey removal.

Heat Removal Method

This hickey removal method is recommended for hickies on neck (or any other area) that have been around for more than 48 hours. The broken blood capillaries in such hickey bruises have at that instant healed and the focus should be on boosting blood circulation in the area rather than stopping bleeding. Increasing the rate of blood circulation helps to speed up the pace at which the coagulated blood is reabsorbed back into the bloodstream.
  • Saturate a clean towel with warm water. Wring it out to get rid of the excess water, then press it against the hickey bruise for 10-20 minutes. Use this home remedy for hickies several times each day, re-heating the towel as necessary to keep it warm. A hot water bottle can also help.

  • You can also do the trick with commercial reusable heat packs which are easily available in drugstores (pharmacies). These have a distinct advantage in that they stay warm for a while longer compared with washcloths not to mention that they are very cost-effective.

  • Some people use tea bags as warm compresses to get rid of their love bites. If you go for this trick, press warm tea bags on the hickies several times each day until they get cured.

The Banana Peel Method

The healing and soothing (cooling) properties of banana peels also make them helpful in removing love bites fast naturally. The section below explains how to remove hickeys at home with a banana:
  1. Peel a ripe banana and eat it (if you want to, of course).

  2. Cut a small piece of the peel and press it against the hickey bruise for 10 minutes or more.

  3. Repeat this home treatment process 2-3 times every day and that love bite will soon go away.

Massage Hickey Removal Trick

Hickies on neck – a common trouble spot – and indeed any other part of the skin can also benefit from massage. The theory behind massaging the hickey bruises is to aid in breaking apart of the coagulated blood and then spreading it out for easier re-absorption into the bloodstream. Massaging is the most effective for hickey removal when done immediately after applying a warm compress:
  1. Place a warm towel on the love bite to warm it up and boost blood circulation in the area. Any other trick that uses the heat method will also suffice.

  2. Massage the love bite firmly with your fingertips. Move the fingers in a stead circular motion in one direction for a few minutes, then switch to the other direction. Massaging the hickey from the center outwards also helps.

  3. Use this home remedy for hickies twice daily for faster results.

Peppermint Oil or Toothpaste

If you are wondering how to remove love bites quickly at home, then peppermint can save the day. Like mint, it is known to increase blood circulation and when applied to a hickey older than 48 hours, it can help to shorten the healing time. It is also claimed to be beneficial to the healing of the damaged blood capillaries. So how do you use this hickey removal method?
  1. Apply a generous amount of peppermint oil (or a mint-based lotion) to the love bites ASAP. Wait until the slight tingling sensation fades away, then wipe it off with a clean, damp towel.

  2. In case you can’t peppermint oil, look for any peppermint-based toothpaste. How to remove a hickey with toothpaste? Simply apply a pea-sized amount of the toothpaste all over the hickey and allow it 10 minutes to work in before wiping it off with a warm, damp washcloth.

Despite being a very effective hickey removal remedy, peppermint should only be used once per day at most to prevent irritation of the skin.

Cocoa Butter Hickey Removal

Cocoa butter can also help with quick healing of hickey bruises. As for how to get rid of hickey with coco butter, this is all you are required to do:
  1. Soak a washcloth in warm water, wring it, and then press it against the love bite for a few minutes.

  2. Apply cocoa butter to the warm skin and then massage it gently for a while to loosen up the coagulated blood and stimulate blood flow in the area.

  3. Do this a few times daily to cure the hickies quickly.

Some people also use peanut butter to treat hickeys.  If you do, allow it to stay on for 10 minutes, then wash it off the skin. It is also helpful to precede the treatment with a hot compress as is the case with cocoa butter.

Aloe Vera for Love Bites Removal

The healing power of aloe vera is close to none. It helps to fasten the healing process for the damaged blood capillaries while soothing and moisturizing the affected area naturally. For best results, start using it as soon as possible after sustaining the hickey.
  1. Nip the end of an aloe vera that has been freshly cut and rub the gel coming out directly on the hickey.  Leave it on the bruise for 10 minutes, then wash or wipe it off. Use this hickey removal remedy 2-3 times each day for the best results.

  2. An aloe vera gel, lotion or cream from the pharmacy will as well suffice. Use it twice daily.

Rubbing Alcohol Method

For a very new hickey, preferably one that you got in the last couple hours or so, you may find the soothing and cooling properties of rubbing alcohol beneficial.
  1. Pour a small amount of rubbing alcohol into a cotton ball.

  2. Rub the hickey gently with the cotton ball for a few minutes.

  3. Slather on generous amount of a moisturizer of your choice to counteract the tendency of rubbing alcohol to dry the skin.

  4. Use this hickey removal trick several times per day until the bruise goes away.

AA Battery Hickey Removal

Of all the home remedies for hickey removal that I found online, this was the most astonishing but I soon got the twist. The idea is to manually break down blood clots and spread the blood out to be re-absorbed back into the body faster.

Although effective, this method has one major drawback; it is painful. If you want to go ahead and use it however, here are the steps to follow:
  1. Place the flat end of the AA battery directly on the hickey.

  2. Push the battery downwards gently and then turn it to one side. Continue turning the battery until it can move no more.

  3. Allow a few seconds, then release the pressure to let the battery return to its starting point.

  4. Do this repeatedly for 5 to 10 minutes each time several times each day.

Chapstick or Lipstick Cap

This hickey removal trick works in a similar way to the battery method. It is not advisable for very fresh love bite marks; those that are less than 24 hours old.

Are you wondering how to get rid of a hickey with chapstick? Simply hold a chapstick, lipstick or pen cap on the hickey and then rotate it to one side while applying just a little pressure to avoid injuring your skin and further aggravating the bruise. For each twisting session, wait about 10 seconds before releasing. Do this repeatedly for 10-15 minutes, 3 times or so a day until the hickey gets healed.

Comb

Rubbing a comb against the surface of the hickey gently can also help to break and spread the blood clots and enhance circulation, consequently aiding in faster healing. A toothbrush can also serve the purpose.

Simply move the bristles of a comb or toothbrush over the hickey firmly but gently enough to prevent breaking the skin or making the hickey worse for 5-10 minutes. Do this several times each day. For best results, finish off by applying a cold compress.

Rub a Coin on the Bruise

Rubbing a penny or any other coin on the affected area of the skin is one of the most effective home remedies for hickeys but it is also one of the most painful. This is especially true for hickies on neck.
  1. Pull the edges of the love bite from opposite ends until the stretch can stretch no more.

  2. Now rub a coin across the surface of the skin, moving from the center outwards. Take care not to rupture your skin.

An eraser can also be used (in the place of a coin) for this DIY hickey removal method.

Preparation H

If it is available in your country, preparation H can serve as a good love bite removal method, thanks to its anti-inflammatory properties. Simply apply this cream topically as directed- just like you would while using it to treat under eye circles.

Tuna Oil

Some people will also swear to the effectiveness of tuna oil as a home remedy for hickeys. Apply tuna oil on the bruised area of the neck, arms, forehead, etc. and allow it to work in for 5 minutes before washing it off with warm water.

Vinegar

There are also people who report vinegar as an effective hickey removal remedy. As for how to get rid of hickeys fast with vinegar, here are the steps:
  1. Soak a cotton ball with vinegar.

  2. Dab it on your skin.

  3. Leave it on for 10 minutes, then wash it off.

Other Tricks to Remove Hickies on Neck, Face, or Arms

  1. Sip fresh orange juice regularly to supply your body with vitamin C and thus fasten the natural healing of the love bites.

  2. Eat lots foods that are rich in vitamin K, especially in early stages of the hickey, to aid in clotting of the blood and thus stop bleeding. Vitamin K supplements can also suffice and so can applying a lotion that contains the vitamin several times each day.

If you find hickeys pesky to be seen floating around on your neck or face, these DIY hickey removal tricks will be of great help. If you are a woman, don’t forget that you can even wear makeup and use it to hide the hickey from your skin as they heal.
