Here Are The 12 Most Insane Prison Escapes In History

Just the idea of prison is enough to scare some people on the straight and narrow for the rest of their life. Not for everyone though, and some people assume they will be able to escape when they get thrown in. For some prisoners, this is true. Some famous prison escapees we will look at today are;
Frank Abagnale
Ted Bundy
Texas 7

There are 9 other ones we will go through today. They are all impressive in their ingenuity of how they managed to get out of prison.

Some of them even managed to escape multiple times from prison under very difficult circumstances which almost leads one to believe that escapism is an innate talent, some people are just born with it.

One/ Alcatraz was dubbed as America’s escape proof prison. It is on an island surrounded by water and it housed America’s worst criminals. June 11th 1962 3 men vanished, all of whom were serving life sentences. They allegedly dug a hole through the cement in their cell with a drill they made from a vacuum cleaner. They were never found even though the prison claims they drowned from the night time swim away from the prison but no remains have been found either.

Two/ Frank Abagnale was an identity fraud expert. The movie Catch Me If You Can is based on his life. He escaped from police custody twice, once from a taxiing airliner and once from a prison while awaiting trial. He served less than 5 years before he started working for the FBI.

Three / Yoshi Shiratori was a prisoner who escaped from prison 4 times. He first escaped from jail when he was sentenced to death in 1933 when he was able to pick his locks. He was re captured and he escaped again through a vent in the ceiling. He escaped two more times and only remained in prison when he turned himself in.

Four/ Two men escaped from the St. Jerome detention center in Quebec, Canada. The helicopter was hi jacked and forced to fly to the prison where two man grabbed on to the ropes dropped down and were taken off. Canada has had two prison escapes in the past two years.

Five / Pascal Payet is a French criminal that has escaped from jail a number of times. He has managed escapes through hijacking helicopters (yes more than once), when he was re caught in 2007 for the umpteeth time he became the most closely surveyed prisoner in France. He is never kept in a prison for longer than 6 months.

Six - Sam Sheppard, a man who was framed for murdering his wife. He was arrested and charged but managed to escape. He spent 4 years on the lam and only came back when evidence surfaced clearing him of all charges. The movie The Fugitive is based on his story.

Seven/ Ted Bundy was a notorious American serial killer. He murdered numerous women and girls, how many is not known. He escaped when he was being taken to court by jumping out a second floor window but was caught 6 days later. He escaped again and no one in the jail even noticed for a day. He was re caught though and died by electric jail at the age of 42.

Eight/ The Great Escape entailed British prisoners of war who managed to escape from a Nazi prison camp in the latter half of WW2. 600 prisoners worked on digging tunnels to help people escape from the camp, they tunnels were 30 feet underground. The tunnels were named Tom, Dick, and Harry. The plan was so manage to let 200 people escape at once. Harry was the only tunnel that was fully completed. THe night of the escape 76 men got to freedom but the 77th was seen by the guards. 73 were recaught and half of them killed.

Nine / Frank Freshwaters is the man who the famous and iconic movie Shawshank Redemption is based on. He was on the run for 56 years and that is the longest time to ever have escaped from prison then to be re-caught.

Ten/ Steven Jay Russell was so famous for escaping he also got his own movie, called I Love You Phillip Morris starring Jim Carrey. He was fired for being gay and decided to turn to a life of crime and take what he could from a society that shunned him for who he was. The first time he was arrested for 6 months he escaped within 4 weeks. He was then arrested for stealing eight hundred thousand dollars from a company but impersonated the judge and set his bail at a price he could pay and just walked out. There are more times he’s managed to escape but it would take too long to go through!

Eleven / The Texas 7 was a group of prisoners that escaped from John. B Connally Unit near Kenedy Texas in December of 2000. They very carefully planned and managed to overtake and restrain 9 civilian maintenance supervisors, 4 correctional officers, and three uninvolved inmates. They were caught a month later as a direct result of an America’s Most Wanted episode.

Twelve/ A more recent escape, this one happened in Jan 26, 2016. 3 inmates escaped from the Orange County, CA max security jail. They cut through steel bars, made their way through plumbing tunnels and used a makeshift rope made out of bed sheets to rappel down the multistory facility. Jonathan Tieu, 20; Hossein Nayeri, 37; and Bac Tien Duong, 43. Bac Tien Duon turned himself back in a week later. The other two were arrested a couple days later based on a tip from a citizen.
