What are antioxidants ? What do they do? Our body converts oxygen into carbon dioxide. This is the process of basal metabolism of the human body. oxidants, or free radicals, are produced in this process. These oxidants cause cell damage and lead to chronic diseases. Free radicals are also the result of stress, exposure to sun or pollution, alcohol, unhealthy foods and smoking. Antioxidants are the soldiers of our body fight free radicals damage. Spinach: spinach is rich in lutein, which protects eyes from macular degeneration and retinal sun damage. It also protects against osteoporosis, heart disease, colon cancer, arthritis and many other diseases. Spinach is best when steamed or sauteed with olive oil.
Whole Grains: Whole grains such as oats and barley beta glucan have that inhibits the absorption of cholesterol. They also have vitamin E prevents cancer. However, white foods made with grains such as white flour and white bread are devoid of fiber, vitamins and minerals. They have grain bread instead of multiple and a bowl of cereal for breakfast with fresh fruits, nuts and raisins.
