.As Vader came leaping toward him, Patrick says he was initially worried that the dog might make things worse. Patrick says he could hardly believe what was happening. "I was impressed by it," he says. Once Vader was swimming Patrick waist-deep water, I was able to let go and walk to the beach. "I felt such relief. The first thing I did was thank God," says Patrick. "The guys came and started to hug me."
Patrick says that despite quick thinking of Ryan, his sons were not particularly frightened. "They are young, and we have a great relationship and they are always out doing things," saying "They've never seen me fail."
However, the first order of business family before heading out on the water the next day? Lifevest. "I had life jackets on board and there is a harness offshore that I have, but not having the kind of life jacket for myself that a kayaker could get, what I needed," says Patrick.
Now he'll always carry one, he says, to the great satisfaction of his wife, who was not on board when the incident occurred. "The boys call Security Captain," says Patrick. "She puts limits on our fun from the point of view of adventure, but the guys kept saying, 'This would not have happened if Captain security was here.'"
