Why do children W-sit?
Many children sit like this because it feels more stable than other sitting positions. The “W” position of the legs widens the child’s base of support and the trunk muscles don’t have to work as hard to keep the child upright.
W-Sitting is commonly seen in children where the child’s bottom is completely on the floor and their feet are splayed out to the sides from the knee—forming a “W” shape with their legs and knees.
This puts excessive pressure on the knee, hip, and ankle joints. Constant exposure to this position can lead to future orthopedic problems, such as poor posture, tight hamstrings or even hip dislocation.
This sitting position is not recommended for anyone. Many typically developing children do move through this position during play, but all parents should be aware that the excessive use of this position during the growing years can lead to future orthopedic problems.
W-sitting should always be discouraged. The following are the reasons why:
- There are orthopedic concerns. W-sitting can predispose a child to hip dislocation.
- If there is muscle tightness, W-sitting will aggravate it. If a child is prone to tightness or contractures, encourage anther pattern of sitting.
- There are neurologic concerns/developmental delays. If a child has increased muscle tone, W-sitting will feed into the abnormal patterns of movement trying to be avoided.
Consultation with a pediatric occupational therapist or physical therapist can assist with developing a plan to protect children’s joints.
