2. Protein rich foods such as chicken, fish, and lean meat require a larger number of calories to digest them and absorb their nutrients. Studies have shown that when you eat protein you burn extra calories compared to when eating carbohydrates or fatty foods. Eating a higher protein, lower carbohydrate diet is desirable if you want to give your metabolism a boost.













3. Dehydration can slow down your metabolic rate, so staying well hydrated by drinking adequate amounts of water during the day is a good way to boost a sluggish metabolism. According to a study published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, drinking water can increase your metabolic rate for up to 40 minutes. It was estimated that if you increase water intake over a year by 1.5 litres a day, you would burn 17,400 extra calories and lose around 2.3 kg.









4. Spices such as chilli, mustard, fennel, garlic, ginger, turmeric, horseradish and cinnamon are all thermogenic spices that can give your metabolism a natural boost. A study published in the Journal of the Medical Association of Thailand found that after consuming capsicum, the active compound in chilli, metabolic rates immediately increased by 20 per cent and were sustained for 30 minutes









5. Drinking a few green teas daily is another good way to increase metabolism and calorie burn. A study published in the International Journal of Obesity found that green tea’s thermogenic effect is due to the synergistic effects of its high caffeine and catechin-polyphenols content, which increases metabolism.











6. Coconut oil can help give your metabolism a rev up. This thermogenic food contains beneficial medium chain fatty acids that are easily used by the body for energy. According to a study in the European Journal of Nutrition, combining chilli and coconut oil in a meal increases thermogenesis by over 50 per cent.
