Roger Federer is one of the most loved, appreciated and iconic athletes to play the game. He has not only surpassed records once established by former greats such as Sampras (286 consecutive weeks at #1), but instead smashed them. This iconic player has been the most consistent across the varying types of surface, as well as in regards to whom he goes up against.
But I digress... before I get too far into the details, lets do the bullet-points...
Firstly (and I think most importantly) he has without a doubt the most beautiful backhand motion of any player in the "tennis history books".
It REALLY IS simply mesmerizing to watch him hit the ball with such elegance.
But don't let that distract you from his forehand. That's like watching a predator hunt in slow motion... the wind-up of his racket, as it seemingly lingers around his torso until Roger recognizes the perfect location for the little yellow-green ball. He then jumps forward into action, smashing the ball into the most ambitious of locations, putting his opponent out of their misery.
He is one of the quietest players on the court. Examine his facial expressions... calm,focused & collected.
Though he is smaller than most of his opponents (albeit 6'1" is not short, but certainly a few inches is a world of difference in tennis), Roger manages to cover the court just as effectively as his larger counterparts.
Roger always maintains his composure (win or lose) far better than anyone else who is under the public eye.
He never forgets to talk to press or sign memorabilia, and with a genuine smile... even following the most upsetting of defeats.
The man wears a blazer both before AND after matches... if that doesn't scream "classy" then I don't know what does!
He makes tennis appear effortless, seldom showing any external indication of tiring.
Roger Federer was born in Switzerland, a place where I too have lived. Tennis, for the Swiss (during his early years), was not something where you have access to a lot of resources in order to improve your game. Yet somehow this man managed to raise himself to a world class level that will make him forever known as the best player tennis has ever seen (in my opinion numbers don't even matter because of how fun it was to watch).
This is a man who simply plays the game. You seldom see him argue or berate the judges (certainly a rare quality most players seem to lack these days). After all, if you're having fun doing what you do, why ruin a good moment?
