Stroke Warning Signs You Shouldn’t Ignore !
In the United States of America stroke is the 4th leading cause of adult handicap.
It occurs as a result of when blood circulation to the brain is hindered.
Stroke can be categorised into two;
1. Ischemic and
2. Hemorrhagic strokes
The ischemic strokes are more common and they usually occur when there is a constriction to the canals of the brain, this causes low blood flow to the brain.
Hemorrhagic strokes are not as common as ischemic strokes but are no less serious, they are caused by hemorrhaging psychological.
Knowing what the symptoms of stroke are and immediately seeking medical assistance can go a long way in preventing major brain damage, handicap and even death.
While it is important to note that symptoms may vary from person to person, there are however some symptoms that are prevalent and these include;
- Numbness of your face, legs or arms, usually on one side of your body.
- Loss of mobility, control and balance.
- Difficulty in understanding what is being said to you, as well as in communicating with others.
Master The F.A.S.T Ways To Recognising The Onset Of A Stroke
F.A.S.T is an acronym for Face, Arms, Speech and Time.
Understanding this will help you quickly detect possible symptoms of stroke before it occurs.
- F for Face: Check if one side of a person’s face sags when you tell the person to smile.
- A for Arms: If the persons arms drifts downwards when you tell him to raise both his arms, then it could be a sign of stroke.
- S for Speech: Check for odd or slurry speech, when you ask the person to say a common phrase such as “all is well, that ends well”.
- T for Time: Time is of the essence and you should call the paramedics immediately you observe any of the signs indicated.
You should note these other symptoms as well;
- Vision problems either with one eye or both.
- Paralysis
- Feeling like a failure or disappointed for no obvious reason.
Stroke can occur without warning so once you notice any of the symptoms seek medical help immediately.
Don’t try to drive yourself to a hospital or seek the help of family members or friends to take you to the clinic, just call for an ambulance immediately and the paramedics know what to do to stabilise you while conveying you to a hospital.
You could also have transient ischemic assaults (TIAs). When the symptoms occur for some minutes then disappear. Do not overlook these symptoms and seek medical help immediately.
Difference Between Stroke And Migraine
You could confuse migraines with TIA symptoms or vice-versa, you should always remember that;
- TIAs are sudden and unexpected, but headaches and migraines occur gradually.
- At times migraines can give positive symptoms as well as added stimuli, like seeing zigzag shapes and flashing lights. In the case of TIA you have deteriorating symptoms like loss of your lower limb power, hearing and vision.
What Are The Risk Factors?
Stroke comes without warning, that’s why it’s called the “sudden death” ailment.
However, you are more prone to developing stroke if you…
- are aged 55 or older
- have high blood pressure
- are a cigarette smoker
- have diabetes
- have heart and blood problems
- have a genetic disorder or imbalance
- have aesthetic disruptions and migraines with mood swings
Health Tips To Help Avoid Stroke
