Dr. Axe: Foods that Cause Kidney Stones

About 10% of all people will have a kidney stone in his or her lifetime. Kidney stones are hard pebbles that form inside your kidneys.

They can be as small as a grain of sand or as large as a golf ball, although stones that big are rare.

They are a common cause of blood in the urine and pain. Pain from kidney stones is usually of sudden onset, very severe and intermittent, and not improved by changes in position, and it radiates from the back, down the flank, and into the groin.

However, certain foods can cause kidney stone and keep these organs from functioning optimally.

Foods that Cause Kidney Stones

Foods high in oxalic acid

Oxalates prevent calcium being absorbed by your body, and can accumulate in your kidney to form a stone.

Foods that contain oxalates include: spinach, rhubarb, tomatoes, collards, eggplant, beets, celery, summer squash, sweet potatoes, peanuts, almonds, blueberries, blackberries, strawberries, parsley, and cocoa.

Grapefruit juice

A number of studies have found a risk for stones from drinking grapefruit juice.

Processed red meats

Animal proteins are also linked to kidney stones and organ damage. Meat is also high in uric acid, a common cause of kidney stones.

Calcium rich foods

Avoid conventional dairy products like milk and processed cheese that can cause a buildup of calcium.

Caffeine

Too much caffeine (coffee, tea, and soda—can) stress out the kidneys and lead to the development of kidney stones due to higher calcium levels in the urine, and even kidney failure due to the stimulant qualities that can cause organ exhaustion.

Note: Drink water throughout the day. For people with a history of kidney stones, doctors usually recommend passing about 2.6 quarts (2.5 liters) of urine a day.

If you live in a hot, dry climate or you exercise frequently, you may need to drink even more water to produce enough urine. If your urine is light and clear, you’re likely drinking enough water.
