DIY: The Baking Soda Hair Magic Secret
Are you aware that simple baking soda is a remarkably easy and convenient way to cleanse our hair? Yes, strange that it may sound initially, it is very true. What surprises me even more is that it works better than most of the other commonly used solutions. Ever since I started using baking soda instead of traditional shampoo my hair has started looking way better.
Also, this is one of the best solutions for the do it yourself (DIY) buffs looking for a way to reduce exposure to potentially harmful chemicals that are the major ingredients in shampoos, conditioners and other such products.
For those of us who are not aware of the harmful chemicals that are present in our regular shampoos here is a small list:
- Laureth Sulfate
- Di-Sodium Lauryl
- DEA/Diethanolamine
- Fragrance enhancing chemicals
- Parabens
What is perhaps most surprising (and scary) is that the fragrances, that are the major constituent in all the beauty products are actually made from well above 4000 different chemical ingredients!
You may wonder how it all started. Frankly, like anyone else, I personally had nothing against shampoos and but when I discovered that’s my lovely mane of hair was thinning out due to the various
It’s that simple!
What I realized was the fact that all shampoos rob our scalps of our natural oils, which in turn leads the body to react by increasing the oil production; and so, when we stop using that shampoo we find that our hair appears even more oiler than it normally did.
Ever since I’ve started using this homemade DIY hair care secret, my hair isn’t as oily as it was before. I have to use this method only every three to four days. This vinegar baking and soda routine is cheap, simple, effective and more importantly, is chemical-free. I think if you give it a try and you will love it too.
Using Baking Soda
Make a mix of:
- 1 part baking soda and
- 3 parts of water
Preparation:
Since my hair is just shoulder length a mix of 2 tablespoonfuls of baking soda and 3 to 4 times of that amount of water is adequate. You may like to adjust this composition depending upon the length of your hair. I use a plastic squeeze bottle to apply this mixture.
Application:
Apply this baking soda and water mix to hair by starting at the scalp and working right up to the hair ends. Rinse with lukewarm water after 2 to 3 minutes and thereafter apply the vinegar rinse.
Vinegar Rinse
This mix consists of 1 part apple cider or white vinegar with about 4 parts of water. You may like to add:
- peppermint
- lavender
- rosemary or
- any other essential oils
to minimize the smell of vinegar. Rinse your hair properly, taking care that the mix does not get into your eyes.
There after a few seconds, wash thoroughly with cold water. Cold water facilitates sealing in the moisture, making the hair appear smooth and shiny.
