You’re an orange juice drinker – nothing can shock you. Except when you pour grapefruit juice by accident and take a big swig. That’ll wake you up in the morning.
And that’s when you drink your orange juice, isn’t it? You think “Mm a nice tall glass of OJ will give me a natural sugar high, so quick energy, and besides – oranges are fruits, so it’s healthy.” The title of this article was just to get you clicking, because the facts here really aren’t that shocking.
Orange: The New Black
A lot of discussion has been happening around the house, the office, and the internet, about fruit vs. fruit juice. They’re both good – better than a morning can of soda, or an Red Bull before bed – but what are the differences between an orange and a glass of orange juice?
To start: a glass of orange juice has a ton of stuff added to it. From flavor packs to essences and oils that make the juice taste and smell more like juice. Oh, and most of the time sugar is added too. Even though it doesn’t need it.
A glass of orange juice is basically an overload. A medium-sized orange has around 60 calories whereas a typical glass of orange juice has 5-6 oranges, so 300 to 360 calories. Not from fat, but from natural sugars. Oranges (and orange juice) are also a great source of vitamin C.
Vitamin C is a water soluble vitamin which means once you’ve hit 100 percent of your daily recommended dosage you’ll just pee out the rest. My dad used to call vitamin C pills “expensive urine” because we can get vitamin C from so many other places.
Can You C The Health Benefits?
Like oranges. If you can limit your orange juice consumption to one small glass a day, you should be alright, but most of the time we overdo it. And even if you don’t overdo it, even if you only drink 60 calories of orange juice, there’s still a big difference between the orange and the juice:
Foods in their whole state require the body to burn a little hotter because of chewing and digestion.
This means that eating an orange will have your body metabolizing better. Diet-induced thermogenesis (the term for “your body burning a little hotter”) is an important part of the metabolic process. And speaking of process…
How do you think you get orange juice? The oranges must be processed, and any time any food is processed things get lost. Things like dietary fiber, which is stripped away during the juicing. Dietary fiber lives in oranges, especially in the white membranes and pith, but all natural fibers are lost in the process.
Is The Juice Worth The Squeeze?
Fiber helps lower cholesterol and maintain blood sugar levels. It also satiates you (helps you feel more full for longer) and kicks thermogenesis into high gear. Along with vitamin C, the fiber in oranges helps your heart stay healthy, helps with digestions, and helps you lose weight.
Oranges are also great for your skin, your immune system, and your vision. Oranges are relatively low in vitamin A, but a medium-sized orange has about 2 percent of your daily recommended dose so oranges are part of a healthy-eyes diet.
So does this mean you should stop drinking orange juice? No. It just means you know that oranges are better than the juice, and the juice isn’t necessarily worth the squeeze. Unless you’re squeezing it yourself.
Whole foods always have higher nutritional value than processed ones.
