Pantera was only 14 when she discovered she had diabetes due to drastic health changes experienced at the time. She had severe headaches, mood swings and she was always thirsty. When a dark ring appeared on her neck, her mother thought it was dirt. The ring was actually caused by type 2 diabetes

Now, Pantera has to perform blood tests regularly and to inject insulin every day.

Doctors say the dark ring around the neck reality is that there is something wrong with the level of insulin in the blood.

Type 2 diabetes is a chronic disease that has no cure. This disease affects insulin levels and how your body processes glucose.

This dark skin color is also known as "acanthosis nigricans" and can affect armpits and groin too. Increased insulin levels activate insulin receptors in the skin that cause dark pigmentation in certain areas of the body.

Experts warn that this type of diabetes is more common among young people than ever before. So Pantera and his mother are trying to tell her story so other families to try to lead a healthier life. "I want other parents to know that this can happen to your child, even if not personally diabetic or if you have someone in your family is." - Pantera's mother told ABC
